Abstract

By solving the two-dimensional, nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically, we study the hydrodynamics of quantized vortices in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate excited by an oscillating potential. We calculate the critical velocity for the vortex nucleation in the presence and absence of dipole-dipole interaction. Above a critical velocity, the oscillating potential nucleates the vortex pairs, whose impulses alternatively change their direction synchronously with the oscillation of the Gaussian potential. We study the dynamics of the vortices and also the formation of the dark solitons which have not been previously reported in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate.

Synergy dynamics of vortices and solitons in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate excited by an oscillating potential

Kazuya Fujimoto, Makoto Tsubota

The hydrodynamics of quantized vortices and solitons in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate excited by an oscillating potential are studied by numerically solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The oscillating potential keeps nucleating vortex dipoles, whose impulses alternately change their direction synchronously with the oscillation of the potential. This leads to synergy dynamics of vortices and solitons in quantum fluids.

Nonlinear dynamics in a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate induced by an oscillating Gaussian potential

Kazuya Fujimoto, Makoto Tsubota

We consider a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate penetrated by a repulsive Gaussian potential and theoretically investigate the dynamics induced by oscillating the Gaussian potential. Our study is based on the numerical calculation of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our calculation reveals the dependence of the characteristic behavior of the condensate on the amplitude and frequency of the oscillating potential. These dynamics are deeply related to the nucleation and dynamics of quantized vortices and solitons. When the potential oscillates with a large amplitude, it nucleates many vortex pairs that move away from the potential. When the amplitude of the oscillation is small, it nucleates solitons through an annihilation of vortex pairs. We discuss three issues concerning the nucleation of vortices. The first is the phase diagram for the nucleation of vortices and solitons near the oscillating potential. The second is the mechanism and critical velocity of the nucleation. The critical velocity of the nucleation is an important issue in quantum fluids, and we propose an expression for the velocity containing both the coherence length and the size of the potential. The third is the divergence of the nucleation time, which is the time it takes for the potential to nucleate vortices, near the critical parameters for vortex nucleation.

Numerical studies on vortices in rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

R. Kishor Kumar, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the formation and dynamics of vortices in quasi two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We solve the time dependent two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation by using a combined split-step Crank-Nicolson (SSCN) and Fast Fourier-Transform (FFT) based numerical scheme and investigate the vortex dynamics in dipolar BECs trapped with harmonic and optical lattice potentials. The consequence of dipole-dipole interaction on vortex nucleation and number of vortices has been analysed. We observe that the breaking of symmetry due to anisotropic dipolar interaction enormously increase the speed of creation of vortices.

Vortices in a rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with two- and three-body interactions

Subramaniyan Sabari

We examine the vortex formation and vortex lattices in a rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with two- and three-body interactions. For this aim, we numerically solve the quasi two-dimensional, cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation with nonlocal dipole-dipole nonlinearity. We find the critical rotation frequency for vortex formation in a pure dipolar BEC and also in a dipolar BEC with presence of both two- and three-body interactions. We also show the vortex lattices in a dipolar BEC with two- and three-body interactions for large rotation frequencies.

Stable three-dimensional vortex solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates with nonlocal dipole–dipole interaction

Volodymyr M. Lashkin, A. I. Yakimenko, Yu. Zaliznyak

We present spatially localized three-dimensional vortex solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates with local short-range and nonlocal dipole–dipole interactions. By means of a linear stability analysis, we investigate the stability of these structures and show that singly quantized vortices are stable provided that the chemical potential is positive and the number of atoms is below some critical value. The results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation.

Vortex Dipole in a BEC with dipole-dipole interaction

C. Yüce, Z. Oztas

We consider single and multiply charged quantized vortex dipole in an oblate dipolar Bose Einstein condensate in the Thomas-Fermi (TF) regime. We calculate the critical velocity for the formation of a pair of vortices of opposite charge. We find that dipolar interactions decrease the critical velocity for a vortex dipole nucleation.
