Disappearance of Trapped Yb+

Jun Yoda, Kazuhiko Sugiyama

The storage time of Yb+ ions trapped in an r.f. trap was determined by the rf resonance absorption method in the presence of buffer gas, without and with laser radiation of a frequency equal to the transition from the S1/2 ground state to the excited P1/2 state. The storage time of the ions with the buffer gas (presure between 1 × 10−4 and 4·2 × 10−4 Pa) was several hours without the laser radiation; this period was shortened to several hundred seconds by irradiation with a 500 nW laser source. This phenomenon shows that the trapped Yb+ ions disappeared from the trap as a result of irradiation with the resonance laser light.

Study of Yb/sup +/ trapped in a RF trap with light buffer gas by irradiation with resonant light (frequency standards)

K. Sugiyama, Jun Yoda

The characteristics of Yb/sup +/ held in a RF trap in the presence of a light buffer gas by irradiation with resonant light beams, including those for depleting the metastable state of the /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ and /sup 2/F/sub 7/2/ states, are studied. Further investigation is made concerning the disappearance of ionic detection signals via RF resonance absorption by irradiation with the radiation driving the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ transition.>

Disappearance of Yb+ in Excited States from rf Trap by Background Gases

Kazuhiko Sugiyama, Jun Yoda

Yb+ ions confined in a rf trap disappear due to some background gases when the Yb+ ions are in excited states. We examined O2, H2O, and H2 as the test background gas. We found that O2 gas enhanced the disappearance to a large degree, as did H2O gas to some degree, but H2 gas had little effect.
