Collective dynamics of atoms embedded into negative index materials

Abstract

The dynamics of two two-level atoms embedded near to the interface of paired metamaterial slabs, one of negative permeability and the other of negative permittivity are studied. The interface behaves as a plasmonic waveguide composed of surface-plasmon polariton modes. It is found that significantly different dynamics occur for the resonant and an off-resonant couplings of the plasma field to the atoms. In the case of the resonant coupling, the plasma field does not appear as a dissipative reservoir to the atoms. We adopt the image method and show that the dynamics of the two atoms are completely equivalent to those of a four-atom system. Moreover, two threshold coupling strengths exist, one corresponding to the strength of coupling of the plasma field to the symmetric and the other to the antisymmetric modes of the system. The thresholds distinguish between the non-Markovian and Markovian regimes of the evolutions. The solutions predict a large and long living entanglement mediated by the plasma field in both Markovian and non-Markovian regimes of the evolution. We also show that a simultaneous Markovian and non-Markovian regimes of the evolution may occur in which the memory effects exist over a finite evolution time. Keywords: met

Collective dynamics and entanglement of two distant atoms embedded into single-negative index material

We study the dynamics of two two-level atoms embedded near to the interface of paired meta-material slabs, one of negative permeability and the other of negative permittivity. This combination generates a strong surface plasmon field at the interface between the meta-materials. It is found that the symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the two-atom system couple to the plasmonic field with different Rabi frequencies. Including the Ohmic losses of the materials we find that the Rabi frequencies exhibit threshold behaviour which distinguish between the non-Markovian (memory preserving) and Markovian (memoryless) regimes of the evolution. Moreover, it is found that significantly different dynamics occur for the resonant and an off-resonant couplings of the plasmon field to the atoms. In the case of the resonant coupling, the field does not appear as a dissipative reservoir to the atoms. We adopt the image method and show that the dynamics of the two atoms coupled to the plasmon field are analogous to the dynamics of a four-atom system in a rectangular configuration. A large and long living entanglement mediated by the plasmonic field in both Markovian and non-Markovian regimes of the evolution is predicted. We also show that a simultaneous Markovian and non-Markovian regime of the evolution may occur in which the memory effects exist over a finite evolution time. In the case of an off-resonant coupling of the atoms to the plasmon field, the atoms interact with each other by exchanging virtual photons which results in the dynamics corresponding to those of two atoms coupled to a common reservoir. In addition, the entanglement is significantly enhanced.

Enhancement of the vacuum Rabi oscillation via surface plasma modes in single-negative metamaterials

Xiaodong Zeng, Gao‐xiang Li, Yaping Yang +1 more

The spontaneous emission properties of a two-level emitter embedded in a negative permeability slab near the interface between a negative permeability slab and a negative permittivity slab are investigated. When the impedances of the two slabs are matched and the dissipation of the material is small, the structure forms a very good single-mode cavity for surface plasmons. The extremely high local density of states of surface plasmons results in ultrastrong coupling between the atom and the surface plasmons, and then large vacuum Rabi frequency. A damped vacuum Rabi oscillation occurs in the dynamic evolution of the excited atom close to the interface. The atomic emission spectrum displays an asymmetric two-peak structure with the peak separation equal to the vacuum Rabi frequency.

Dynamics of atom-field entanglement: Towards strong-coupling and non-Markovian regimes

Nick Cummings, B. L. Hu

We examine the dynamics of bipartite quantum entanglement between a two-level atom and the electromagnetic field. We begin with the Jaynes-Cummings model with a single field mode and examine in detail the exact time evolution of entanglement, including cases where the atomic state is initially mixed and the atomic transition is detuned from resonance. We then explore the effects of other nearby modes by calculating the exact time evolution of entanglement in more complex systems with two, three, and five field modes. For these cases we can obtain exact solutions which include the strong-coupling regime. Finally, we consider the entanglement of a two-level atom with the infinite collection of modes present in the intracavity field of a Fabre-Perot cavity. In contrast to the usual treatment of atom-field interactions with a continuum of modes using the Born-Markov approximation, our treatment in all cases describes the full non-Markovian dynamics of the atomic subsystem under general couplings. Only when an analytic expression for the infinite mode case is desired do we need to make a weak coupling assumption which at late times approximates Markovian dynamics.

Photon-mediated dynamics of two atoms in a one-dimensional resonator waveguide

Tao Li, Wenju Gu, Liangbin He +4 more

Abstract We investigate the quantum dynamics of two two-level atoms coupled to a one-dimensional resonator waveguide. Using the resolvent method, we obtain exact analytical solutions for the atomic evolution and photon scattering processes within the single-excitation subspace. The photonic band structure of the waveguide dictates distinctly different dynamical regimes. For atomic frequencies at the band center and small interatomic separation, the system exhibits Markovian decay and relaxes into a steady-state subradiant Bell entangled state. In contrast, near the band edge, non-Markovian dynamics dominates, leading to the formation of atom-photon bound states that mediate persistent, coherent interactions between the atoms. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the atomic detuning and separation provide effective control over singlephoton scattering, enabling a tunable quantum interface.

Non-Markovian dynamics of collective atomic states coupled to a waveguide

Kanu Sinha, Pierre Meystre, Pablo Solano

When atoms are optically coupled to a one dimensional waveguide, they can interact through macroscopic distances. The retardation effects inherent to field propagation and the associated delay in information backflow between the atoms result in a departure from the familiar Markovian dynamics. We study the case of two two level atoms coupled along a waveguide. One remarkable feature of the dynamics in this regime is the formation of long-lived bound states in the continuum (BIC),30 that refer to a hybrid diatomic molecule bound together by propagating modes of a field. In particular, we study the probability of reaching such a bound states of the system starting in an initially anti-symmetric state of the emitters.

Entanglement dynamics of two atoms coupling to a quantum cavity

XIAO SAN MA, Mu-Tian Cheng

Recently, strong coupling dominating dissipative and decoherence effects between the atom and a quantum cavity has been investigated experimentally. In this paper, we study the entanglement dynamics of two two-level atoms coupling to a quantum cavity where each mirror is formed by a chain of atoms trapped near a one-dimensional waveguide. We consider the effects of both Markovian dynamics and non-Markovian dynamics on the entanglement evolution of the two central atoms. Our results show that the steady entanglement can be generated between the two central atoms whether the system is under the Markov regime or non-Markov regime when the number of atoms of the atomic mirrors is finite. When the number of the atomic mirrors is large enough, the entanglement of two central atoms takes oscillating behavior without a stable value. The effect of detuning and dissipation on entanglement dynamics is also discussed and the results imply that the detuning plays an important role in improving the entanglement amplitude.
