Abstract

Using a monolithic doubly resonant parametric down-converter, we demonstrate an ultrabright source of subnatural linewidth, temporally long single photons at the rubidium D1 line. The single photons have a spectral brightness one order-of-magnitude higher than previously reported and a waveform controllable by electro-optic modulation. Applications to several areas of quantum communication, quantum memories, and quantum key distribution are possible.

Bright single photons for light-matter interaction

Chih‐Hsiang Wu, Tsung-Yao Wu, Yung-Chin Yeh +5 more

Single photons of subnatural linewidth and high spectral brightness are necessary for efficient light-matter interaction at the single-photon level, which lies at the heart of many quantum photonic technologies. Here we demonstrate a bright source of single photons with subnatural linewidth, controllable waveforms, and a high spectral brightness of $3.67\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{5}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{s}{}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{mW}{}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}{}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The interaction between the single photons and atoms is demonstrated by the controlled absorption of the single photons in an atomic vapor. Our work has potential applications in quantum information technologies.

A miniature ultrabright source of temporally long, narrowband biphotons

Chih‐Sung Chuu, G. Y. Yin, Stephen E. Harris

We demonstrate a miniature source of long biphotons utilizing the cluster effect and double-pass pumping in a monolithic doubly resonant parametric down-converter. We obtain a biphoton correlation time of 17.1 ns with a generation rate of 1.10×105 biphotons/(s mW) and an estimated linewidth of 8.3 MHz.

Sub-megahertz linewidth single photon source

Markus Rambach, Aleksandrina Nikolova, Till J. Weinhold +1 more

We report 100% duty cycle generation of sub-MHz single photon pairs at the rubidium D1 line using cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion. The temporal intensity cross correlation function exhibits a bandwidth of 666±16 kHz for the single photons, an order of magnitude below the natural linewidth of the target transition. A half-wave plate inside our cavity helps to achieve triple resonance between pump, signal, and idler photon, reducing the bandwidth and simplifying the locking scheme. Additionally, stabilisation of the cavity to the pump frequency enables the 100% duty cycle. The quantum nature of the source is confirmed by the idler-triggered second-order autocorrelation function at τ=0 to be gs,s(2)(0)= 0.016±0.002 for a heralding rate of 5 kHz. The generated photons are well-suited for storage in quantum memory schemes with sub-natural linewidths, such as gradient echo memories.

Statistics of Narrow-Band Single Photons for Quantum Memories Generated by Ultrabright Cavity-Enhanced Parametric Down-Conversion

Matthias Scholz, Lars Koch, Oliver J. Benson

Narrow-band single photons represent an important resource for quantum memories due to their efficient interaction with atomic resonances. In this Letter, we report on the generation of photons with 3 MHz linewidth by cavity-enhanced parametric down-conversion and demonstrate direct proof of their single-photon character by detection of heralding idler photons. Compared to a Poissonian source, a suppression of higher-order photon numbers by nearly 2 orders of magnitude could be achieved. Moreover, the brightness of our source exceeds previous realizations by more than a factor of 100.

Subnatural-linewidth fluorescent single photons

Hebin Zhang, Gao‐xiang Li, Yong‐Chun Liu

Subnatural-linewidth single photons are of vital importance in quantum optics and quantum information science. According to previous research, it appears difficult to utilize resonance fluorescence to generate single photons with subnatural linewidth. Here we propose a universally applicable approach to generate fluorescent single photons with subnatural linewidth, which can be implemented based on Λ-shape and similar energy structures. Further, the general condition to obtain fluorescent single photons with subnatural linewidth is revealed. The single-photon linewidth can be easily manipulated over a broad range by external fields, which can be several orders of magnitude smaller than the natural linewidth. Our study can be easily implemented in various physical platforms with current experimental techniques and will significantly facilitate the research on the quantum nature of resonance fluorescence and the technologies in quantum information science.
