Abstract

Single photons of subnatural linewidth and high spectral brightness are necessary for efficient light-matter interaction at the single-photon level, which lies at the heart of many quantum photonic technologies. Here we demonstrate a bright source of single photons with subnatural linewidth, controllable waveforms, and a high spectral brightness of $3.67\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{5}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{s}{}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{mW}{}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}{}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The interaction between the single photons and atoms is demonstrated by the controlled absorption of the single photons in an atomic vapor. Our work has potential applications in quantum information technologies.

Ultrabright Single Photon Source with Subnatural Linewidth

Chih‐Hsiang Wu, Tsung-Yao Wu, Yung-Chin Yeh +5 more

Using a monolithic doubly resonant parametric down-converter, we demonstrate an ultrabright source of subnatural linewidth, temporally long single photons at the rubidium D1 line. The single photons have a spectral brightness one order-of-magnitude higher than previously reported and a waveform controllable by electro-optic modulation. Applications to several areas of quantum communication, quantum memories, and quantum key distribution are possible.

Spectral characterization of single photon sources with ultra-high resolution, accuracy and sensitivity

Lijun Ma, Oliver Slattery, Xiao Hong Tang

In future quantum communication systems, single photons, as the information carriers, are required to possess very narrow linewidths and accurate wavelengths for an efficient interaction with quantum memories. Spectral characterization of such single photon sources is necessary and must be performed with very high spectral resolution, wavelength accuracy and detection sensitivity. In this paper, we propose a method to precisely characterize spectral properties of narrow-linewidth single-photon sources using an atomic vapor cell based on electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). By using an atomic cesium vapor cell, we have experimentally demonstrated a spectral resolution of better than 150 kHz, an absolute wavelength accuracy of within 50 kHz and an exceptional detection sensitivity suitable for optical signals as weak as −117 dBm.

Subnatural-linewidth fluorescent single photons

Hebin Zhang, Gao‐xiang Li, Yong‐Chun Liu

Subnatural-linewidth single photons are of vital importance in quantum optics and quantum information science. According to previous research, it appears difficult to utilize resonance fluorescence to generate single photons with subnatural linewidth. Here we propose a universally applicable approach to generate fluorescent single photons with subnatural linewidth, which can be implemented based on Λ-shape and similar energy structures. Further, the general condition to obtain fluorescent single photons with subnatural linewidth is revealed. The single-photon linewidth can be easily manipulated over a broad range by external fields, which can be several orders of magnitude smaller than the natural linewidth. Our study can be easily implemented in various physical platforms with current experimental techniques and will significantly facilitate the research on the quantum nature of resonance fluorescence and the technologies in quantum information science.

Observation of Subnatural-Linewidth Biphotons in a Two-Level Atomic Ensemble

Jyun-Kai Lin, Tzu-Hsiang Chien, Chin-Te Wu +4 more

Biphotons and single photons with narrow bandwidths and long coherence times are essential to the realization of long-distance quantum communication (LDQC) and linear optical quantum computing (LOQC). In this Letter, we manipulate the biphoton wave functions of the spontaneous four-wave mixing in a two-level atomic ensemble with a single-laser pump scheme. Our innovative experimental approach enables the generation of biphotons with a sub-MHz bandwidth of 0.36 MHz, a record spectral brightness of 2.28×10^{7} s^{-1} mW^{-1} MHz^{-1}, and a temporally symmetric wave packet at moderate optical depth. The strong nonclassical cross-correlation of the biphotons also enables the observation of heralded sub-MHz-linewidth single photons with a pronounced single-photon nature. The generation of sub-MHz-linewidth biphotons and single photons with a two-level atomic ensemble not only finds applications in quantum repeaters and large cluster states for LDQC and LOQC but also opens up the opportunity to miniaturize the biphoton or single-photon sources for chip-scale quantum technologies.
