Abstract

This paper investigates the phenomenon of three-pulse photon echo in thick rare-earth ions doped crystal whose thickness is far larger than 0.002 cm which is adopted in previous works. The influence of thickness on the three-pulse photon echo’s amplitude and efficiency is analyzed with the Maxwell–Bloch equations solved by finite-difference time-domain method. We demonstrate that the amplitude of three-pulse echo will increase with the increasing of thickness and the optimum thickness to generate three-pulse photon echo is 0.3 cm for Tm 3 + :YAG when the attenuation of the input pulse is taken into account. Meanwhile, we find the expression 0.09 exp ⁡ ( α ′ L ) , which is previously employed to describe the relationship between echo’s efficiency and thickness, should be modified as 1.3 ⋅ 0.09 exp ⁡ ( 2.4 ⋅ α ′ L ) with the propagation of echo considered.

Simulations of 2D Maxwell-Bloch equations

Rare-earth-doped crystals can be modelled as inhomogeneously broadened two-level atoms. Beam propagation in the crystals can be described by the Maxwell-Bloch equations. We numerically solve Maxwell's equations by using the FFT-finite difference beam propagation method and the Bloch equations by using the finite difference method. Numerical simulation results are given for an off-axis 3-pulse photon echo.

Improving the intensity and efficiency of compressed echo in rare-earth-ion-doped crystal

Xiurong Ma, Yuqing Liang, Song Wang +2 more

We investigate the intensity and efficiency of a compressed echo, which is important in arbitrary waveform generation (AWG). A new model of compressed echo is proposed based on the optical Bloch equations, which exposes much more detailed parameters than the conventional model, such as the time delay of the chirp lasers, the nature of the rare-earth-ion-doped crystal, etc. According to the novel model of compressed echo, we find that reducing the time delay of the chirp lasers and scanning the lasers around the center frequency of the inhomogeneously broadened spectrum, while utilizing a crystal with larger coherence time and excitation lifetime can improve the compressed echo's intensity and efficiency. The theoretical analysis is validated by numerical simulations.

Photon-echo attenuation in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals

Stefan B. Altner, G. Zumofen, Urs P. Wild +1 more

We study the optical properties of rare-earth-ion-doped inorganic crystals with an emphasis on the dependence of two-pulse photon echoes on the excitation density in the system. The experimental investigations concentrate on ${\mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}$:${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$:${\mathrm{Eu}}^{3+}$ codoped ${\mathrm{Y}}_{2}$Si${\mathrm{O}}_{5}$ and YAl${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ crystals at low temperatures. With two pulses of one laser the echo is induced in one ion species and with a third, "scrambler" pulse of a second laser another species is excited. These scrambler excitations lead to a dephasing and thus to an echo attenuation which depends on the strength, frequency, and time of the scrambler pulse. The spectral sensitivity of the echo attenuation is used for a spectroscopic technique: "photon-echo attenuation spectroscopy." As a function of the delay time ${t}_{s}$ between the scrambler pulse and the onset of the two-pulse echo sequence the attenuation shows a very specific behavior dictated by the excitation-induced frequency shifts (EFS's). For ${t}_{s}$ between the two echo-inducing pulses the echo intensity is partially regained by the "dephasing-rephasing balancing" of the reversible EFS's. For the theoretical description a stochastic model is introduced and the dephasing by excitation-induced lattice vibrations and by EFS's are analyzed in detail. The present results are discussed in the light of previous experimental and theoretical investigations.

Photon echoes using broad-band c.w. laser

P. Talagala, S. H. Ling, M. K. Kim

We have observed various types of photon echoes in a rare-earth doped crystal using a broad-band c.w. dye laser. Even at the very low spectral power density of the laser, the quantum efficiency of photon echo generation is as large as those using high-power or narrow-band lasers. We have observed Carr-Purcell type photon echo series for the first time in a rare-earth doped crystal. We have measured relaxation of two-pulse photon echo, three-pulse stimulated photon echo, and many-pulse Carr-Purcell photon echo, and found some new features.

Photon-echo attenuation by dynamical processes in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals

Felix R. Graf, Alois Renn, G. Zumofen +1 more

We study the photon-echo attenuation by various dynamical processes in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals. The experimental investigations concentrate on a ${\mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}:{\mathrm{Eu}}^{3+}:{\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ codoped ${\mathrm{Y}}_{2}{\mathrm{SiO}}_{5}$ crystal at low temperatures. Two-pulse photon-echo intensities are measured as a function of the pulse intensities when either the ${\mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}$ or the ${\mathrm{Eu}}^{3+}$ ions are excited. For the quantitative interpretation we consider primarily excitation-induced frequency shifts (EFS) by diagonal and off-diagonal interactions and show that for the systems under consideration EFS are dominated by diagonal interactions. The observed echo attenuation by EFS is compared with the predictions calculated from independent Stark-field measurements and reasonable agreement is obtained. The broadening by spin-ion interactions, by nonequilibrium phonons and the dependence of the echo attenuation on the frequency position in the inhomogeneously broadened band are further investigated.

Numerical Solution and Applications of Photon Echo

Longzhao Lu, Cheng Li, Xiangyang Yu

Important applications in optical information storage and processing based on photon echo have been developed. An accurate and effective numerical method to solve the Maxwell-Bloch equations that are used to describe the optical pulse propagation and interaction with inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium will be introduced.Two-pulse photon echo is calculated then photon echo and multiple-pulse photon echoes are stimulated in optical thin(thick) media by using the method, and the physical properties of those echoes are analyzed. The results show that the approach to storage and retrieval of light using multiple-pulse photon echoes based on stimulated photon echo is an effective mode.
