Abstract

We report the momentum-resolved measurement of Bloch bands in an optical Lieb lattice for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). A BEC in the lattice is transported to a desired quasimomentum by applying a constant force. The energy dispersion of the lowest band is obtained by integrating measured group velocities. We also measure the gap from the lowest band to the higher bands with the same quasimomentum, which can be extracted from the oscillation of the sublattice populations after preparing a superposition of the band eigenstates. We show that the experimental results agree with a band calculation based on the Bogoliubov approximation. It is revealed that the second band, which should be flat in a single-particle description, is shifted and, in particular, distorted around the Brillouin zone edge as the interaction strength increases.

Coherent driving and freezing of bosonic matter wave in an optical Lieb lattice

Shintaro Taie, Hideki Ozawa, Tomohiro Ichinose +3 more

Although kinetic energy of a massive particle generally has quadratic dependence on its momentum, a flat, dispersionless energy band is realized in crystals with specific lattice structures. Such macroscopic degeneracy causes the emergence of localized eigenstates and has been a key concept in the context of itinerant ferromagnetism. We report the realization of a "Lieb lattice" configuration with an optical lattice, which has a flat energy band as the first excited state. Our optical lattice potential has various degrees of freedom in its manipulation, which enables coherent transfer of a Bose-Einstein condensate into the flat band. In addition to measuring lifetime of the flat band population for different tight-binding parameters, we investigate the inter-sublattice dynamics of the system by projecting the sublattice population onto the band population. This measurement clearly shows the formation of the localized state with the specific sublattice decoupled in the flat band, and even detects the presence of flat-band breaking perturbations, resulting in the delocalization. Our results will open up the possibilities of exploring the physics of flat bands with a highly controllable quantum system.

Interaction-Enhanced Group Velocity of Bosons in the Flat Band of an Optical Kagome Lattice

Tsz-Him Leung, Malte N. Schwarz, Shao‐Wen Chang +3 more

Geometric frustration of particle motion in a kagome lattice causes the single-particle band structure to have a flat s-orbital band. We probe this band structure by placing a Bose-Einstein condensate into excited Bloch states of an optical kagome lattice, and then measuring the group velocity through the atomic momentum distribution. We find that interactions renormalize the band structure, greatly increasing the dispersion of the third band, which is nearly non-dispersing the single-particle treatment. Calculations based on the lattice Gross-Pitaevskii equation indicate that band structure renormalization is caused by the distortion of the overall lattice potential away from the kagome geometry by interactions.

Route towards classical frustration and band flattening via optical lattice distortion

Pil Maria Saugmann, Vargas, José, Yann Kiefer +4 more

We propose and experimentally explore a method for realizing frustrated lattice models using a Bose-Einstein condensate held in an optical square lattice. A small lattice distortion opens up an energy gap such the lowest band splits into two. Along the edge of the first Brillouin zone for both bands a nearly flat energy-momentum dispersion is realized. For the excited band a highly degenerate energy minimum arises. By loading ultracold atoms into the excited band, a classically frustrated $XY$ model is formed, describing rotors on a square lattice with competing nearest and next nearest tunnelling couplings. Our experimental optical lattice provides a regime, where a fully coherent Bose-Einstein condensate is observed, and a regime where frustration is expected. If we adiabatically tune from the condensate regime to the regime of frustration, the momentum spectra shows a complete loss of coherence. Upon slowly tuning back to the condensate regime, coherence is largely restored. Good agreement with model calculations is obtained.

Nonlinear Bloch-Zener oscillations for Bose-Einstein condensates in a Lieb optical lattice

Peng He, Zhi Li

Abstract We investigate Bloch–Zener oscillations and mean-field Bloch bands of a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in a Lieb optical lattice. We find that the atomic interaction will break the point group symmetry of the system, leading to the destruction of the Dirac cone structure, while the flat band is preserved on the highly symmetric lines. Due to the nonlinear effect, a tubular band structure with a flat band will appear in the system. Furthermore, comparing with that the tight-binding (TB) model fails to describe the interacting bosonic systems in the honeycomb lattice, we show that the TB model is applicable to study the nonlinear energy band structures for the Lieb lattice. In addition, we show that the loop structure can be determined by the observation of the chaos of the state in the Bloch–Zener oscillations.

Atomic Bloch-Zener Oscillations and Stückelberg Interferometry in Optical Lattices

Sebastian Kling, Tobias Salger, Christopher Grossert +1 more

We report on experiments investigating quantum transport and band interferometry of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a two-band miniband structure, realized with a Fourier-synthesized optical lattice potential. Bloch-Zener oscillations, the coherent superposition of Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling between the two bands are observed. When the relative phase between paths in different bands is varied, an interference signal is observed, demonstrating the coherence of the dynamics in the miniband system. Measured fringe patterns of this Stückelberg interferometer allow to interferometrically map out the band structure of the optical lattice over the full Brillouin zone.
