Abstract

We report on experiments investigating quantum transport and band interferometry of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a two-band miniband structure, realized with a Fourier-synthesized optical lattice potential. Bloch-Zener oscillations, the coherent superposition of Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling between the two bands, are observed. When the relative phase between paths in different bands is varied, an interference signal is observed, demonstrating the coherence of the dynamics in the miniband system. Measured fringe patterns of this Stückelberg interferometer allow us to interferometrically map out the band structure of the optical lattice over the full Brillouin zone.

Quantum dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven bichromatic optical lattices

Dirk Witthaut, F. Trimborn, V. Kegel +1 more

We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven optical superlattices. For a bichromatic lattice, each Bloch band splits up into two minibands such that the dynamics is governed by the interplay of Bloch oscillations and transitions between the bands. Thus, bichromatic potentials provide an excellent model system for the study of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling, and they allow for a variety of applications in matter-wave interferometry and quantum metrology. In the present paper, we investigate the coherent dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate as well as its stability. Different mechanisms of instability are discussed, which lead to a rapid depletion of the condensate.

Observation of Stückelberg oscillations in accelerated optical lattices

Alessandro Zenesini, Donatella Ciampini, O. Morsch +1 more

We report the experimental observation of St\"uckelberg oscillations of matter waves in optical lattices. Extending previous work on Landau-Zener tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, we study the effects of the accumulated phase between two successive crossings of the Brillouin zone edge. Our results agree well with a simple model for multiple Landau-Zener tunneling events taking into account the band structure of the optical lattice.

Atomic Landau-Zener Tunneling in Fourier-Synthesized Optical Lattices

Tobias Salger, Carsten Geckeler, Sebastian Kling +1 more

We report on an experimental study of quantum transport of atoms in variable periodic optical potentials. The band structure of both ratchet-type asymmetric and symmetric lattice potentials is explored. The variable atom potential is realized by superimposing a conventional standing wave potential of lambda/2 spatial periodicity with a fourth-order multiphoton potential of lambda/4 periodicity. We find that the Landau-Zener tunneling rate between the first and the second excited Bloch band depends critically on the relative phase between the two spatial lattice harmonics.

Coherent acceleration and Landau-Zener tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in 1-D optical lattices

O. Morsch, Jörg Helge Müller, Matteo Cristiani +1 more

We have loaded Bose-Einstein condensates into one-dimensional, off-resonant optical lattices and accelerated them by chirping the frequency difference between the two lattice beams. For small values of the lattice well-depth, Bloch oscillations were observed. Landau-Zener tunneling out of the lowest lattice band, leading to a breakdown of the oscillations, was also studied. In order to allow in-trap measurements of these phenomena, we dynamically compensated for the intrinsic micromotion of the atoms in our time-orbiting potential trap.

Phase-dependent Landau-Zener effect in asymmetric optical lattices

Tobias Salger, Carsten Geckeler, Sebastian Kling +1 more

We report experimental results on transport properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic optical potentials of variable asymmetry. By studying the Landau-Zener effect and Bloch oscillations, we have explored the band structure of both ratchet-type asymmetric and symmetric optical potentials.
