THEORY OF OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN TWO-PHOTON RESONANCE MEDIA

Abstract

In this paper, the optical bistability in two-photon resonance media is discussed theoretically. The steady-state behavior in both the cases of two-photon far- and near-resonance, and the transient behavior in the case of two-photon near-resonance are analysed. The two-photon vector model is established and applied to the analyses. The corresponding characteristic curves in sodium vapour are given based or the result of numerical calculation.

RESONATORLESS OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN TRANSMISSION OF THIN SEMICONDUCTOR FILM

P. I. Khadzhi, D. A. Markov, A. V. Corovai

The optical bistability phenomenon in the steady-state light transmission by a thin semiconductor film is studied taking into account two-pulse two-photon excitation of biexcitons from the ground state of the crystal. It is shown that the transmission of one of the two pulses by the film is determined by the intensity of the second pulse. The criteria of existence of an optical bistability are established. 1.

Theory of two-photon double-beam optical bistability

Govind Prasad Agrawal, Christos Flytzanis

Transmission characteristics of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with two independent optical beams are considered under steady-state conditions. The sum frequency of two beams is taken to be near a two-photon resonance of the nonlinear medium. Two beams are coupled through the intensity-dependent susceptibility and influence propagation of each other in a mutual way. A set of two coupled-state equations is derived and it incorporates saturated absorption and dispersion as well as the effect of optical Stark shift. The system is found to have as many as seven stationary states, and at most, three are stable among them. The degenerate case of a single beam in two-photon resonance with the medium is also considered with particular emphasis on the effect of the optical Stark shift on optical bistability.

TWO-PHOTON OPTICAL MULTISTABILITY THEORY

Li Fu-Li, 中国科学技术大学物理系

The theory of the optical multistability by two-photon resonant interaction is investigated. The nonlinear medium inside a Fabry-Perot cavity is in two-photon resonance with the laser beam. The two-photon equation of state including dynamical Stark shift and relaxation parameters is obtained and studied under mean-field approximation. The equations for both Fabry-Perot cavity and ring cavity take basically the same form. The physics mechanisms resulting in optical multistability are also studied. It has been shown that the combined effects of Kerr switching and saturation absorption switching can lead to two-photon optical double-bistability, tristability as well as bistability. Furthermore, the criterion conditions under which double-bistability or tristability can occur are given and discussed. Finally, the phase-conjugated reflectivity by two-photon four-wave mixing is also shown to exhibit multistability as well as hysteresis.

By using quantum method and decorrelation approximation, the twophoton bistability equation in three level atom medium is obtained. The conclusions are consistent with experiment results. The shortcomings in treating this problem by using two-photon vecter model are pointed out.

TEMPORAL ASPECTS OF ABSORPTIVE TWO-PHOTON OPTICAL BISTABILITY

We investigate the temporal aspects of absorptive two-photon optical bistability described by a semiclassical theory in the limit of a fully developed hysteresis cycle and when all decay rates have comparable magnitude. We show by multiple time-scale perturbation analysis that near the high-transmission branch the behavior of the system is governed by an equation for the field amplitude which determines the long-time evolution of the system, whereas, near the low-transmission branch all dynamical variables vary on the long time scale, and it is possible to describe the transition between the two stable branch by simple equations.

ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN LASER WITH SATURABLE ABSORBER

Smail Djabi, H. Boudoukha, Saïd Meguellati

In this paper, we develop a theoretical model that accurately describes the nonlinear phenomenon of optical bistability in Fabry-Perot laser containing a saturable absorber "LSA". We present an analytical model for optical bistability in a LSA. The physics of optical bistability in a classical optical resonant system such as Fabry-Perot etalon has been well-established, and can be described by simple analytical models. The photon intensities were determined as a function of the pumping rate of the active medium, and we analyzed the linear stability of the stationary solutions obtained.
