Abstract

In this paper a quantum mechanics model for describing multiphoton optical bistability is given. Based on this molel, the state equation of multi-photon option1 bistability is obtained. The method which for calculating the threshold of multi-photon optical bistability is also given. After analyzing the potential function, we obtain the statics stability criterion and the explanation of switching characteristics. The stable region and the inferior stable region in the bistability characteristic curve are separated. In fact, multiphoton optical stable states are actually multi-photon optical stable-inferior stable states. We also discuss the phase transition problem of multi-photon optical bistability and multi-photon lasers.

Criteria for multiphoton optical bistability in a high-Q ring cavity

Shenping Li, Yizhou Zhang

The static criterion for multiphoton optical bistability in a high-Q ring cavity is analytically derived for a homogeneously broadened atomic system when the input coherent field is in perfect resonance with the atoms and with the cavity. It is shown how the static threshold condition, the bistable regime, the critical point, and the threshold input field amplitude for the optical bistability, change with the variables of the photon number involved in the transition and the system parameter C/sub n/. Criteria for the stability of the stationary solutions are derived and discussed. The results show that in the input-output curves, all parts of the branches with negative slope are unstable, and some parts of the branches with positive slope may be unstable. Considering the stability of the stationary solutions, complete criteria for optical bistability are discussed.>

Theoretical analysis of complex amplitude of vibration for multi-photon optical Instability

Maxim A. Abakumov

In this paper, the theory of linear stability analysis is used in analyzing the complex amplitude of vibration of multi-photon optical bistability which was described by semiolassical Maxwell-Blooh equations. The results of analysis show that after the adiabatio elimination being acted to atomic polarization there is no instability on cooperation branch and one single branch of multi-photon optical bistability characteristic, showing that there is no chaos of multi-photon optical bistability which was caused by the instability of the soft mode at the same time. It has been indicated that the third condition of stability is related to bistable characteristic of multi-photon optical bistability.

Intrinsic optical bistability via switching between saturable and reverse saturable absorption

Seyed Morteza Mousavi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We present a novel approach to achieving intrinsic optical bistability and multistability through the interplay between saturable and reverse saturable absorption. Our findings reveal that the stable points on the optical bistability curve align with the switching points of intensity-dependent nonlinear absorption. By analyzing the optical properties of a four-level cascade quantum system, we demonstrate that these switching behaviors can be triggered by applying laser fields to induce nonlinear absorption. Furthermore, we propose a comprehensive model to describe the intensity-dependent nonlinear absorption within this quantum system. Finally, it is shown that the optical bistability switches to the multistability when the detuning of applied fields exceeds the multi-photon resonance condition.

Unified approach to multiphoton lasers and multiphoton bistability

M. D. Reid, K. J. McNeil, Daniel F. Walls

This paper presents a unified theory of nonequilibrium transitions which occur in radiation interacting via an $n$-photon transition with atomic systems inside optical cavities. Incoherent pumping of the atoms and coherent driving of the cavity are included. Examples of such systems are the $n$-photon laser, the $n$-photon laser with injected signal, and $n$-photon optical bistability. The state equation and stability conditions for these phenomena are derived. Fluctuations are included via a Fokker-Planck equation in the constant-diffusion approximaton for which potential solutions may be obtained in the steady state. When these solutions are used, moments of the photon distribution can be calculated for the above systems in the specific cases of one- and two-photon transitions.

TWO-PHOTON OPTICAL MULTISTABILITY THEORY

Li Fu-Li, 中国科学技术大学物理系

The theory of the optical multistability by two-photon resonant interaction is investigated. The nonlinear medium inside a Fabry-Perot cavity is in two-photon resonance with the laser beam. The two-photon equation of state including dynamical Stark shift and relaxation parameters is obtained and studied under mean-field approximation. The equations for both Fabry-Perot cavity and ring cavity take basically the same form. The physics mechanisms resulting in optical multistability are also studied. It has been shown that the combined effects of Kerr switching and saturation absorption switching can lead to two-photon optical double-bistability, tristability as well as bistability. Furthermore, the criterion conditions under which double-bistability or tristability can occur are given and discussed. Finally, the phase-conjugated reflectivity by two-photon four-wave mixing is also shown to exhibit multistability as well as hysteresis.

Optical bistability and switching of coherent quasiparticles in condensed media

P. I. Bardetskiı̆, V. A. Zalozh, A. Kh. Rotaru +2 more

An investigation is reported of static and dynamic optical bistability and optical switching in a system of coherent excitons and biexcitons in semiconductors subject to the exciton-photon interaction and optical conversion of excitons into biexcitons. The Heisenberg equations of motion for excitons and biexcitons and the wave equation for the field are used to derive a system of nonlinear differential equations describing the dynamic evolution of such a system. The equation of state for a theory of optical bistability is derived for the static case. A study is made of the stability of stationary optical bistability states. A computer experiment is used in an investigation of the switching times between the branches
