Exploring Few-body Scattering Resonances in a Bose-Fermi Mixture: From Feshbach Dimers to Efimov Trimers

Tyler D. Cumby

This thesis presents experiments exploring Feshbach molecules and Efimov trimers in an ultracold Bose-Fermi atomic gas mixture of 40K and 87Rb. These bound states are accessed via scattering resonances, called Fano-Feshbach resonances, which arise as a consequence of a bound state being tuned through degeneracy with the threshold energy of colliding atoms. In addition to allowing the tunability of interactions, the Fano-Feshbach resonance allows for a weakly bound molecule state, called the Feshbach molecule state, to be populated. The efficiency of conversion to the Feshbach molecule state depends upon the rate with which the bound state energy is swept through degeneracy with atomic threshold energy. In regions of large scattering lengths, three-body bound states, called Efimov states, also influence inelastic Bose-Bose-Fermi collisions and boson+molecule collisions in our system. The work presented in this thesis utilizes a magnetically tunable Fano-Feshbach resonance to study Feshbach molecule creation in the perturbative limit (the limit of fast magnetic-field sweeps) and the saturated limit (the limit of slow sweeps), where a phenomenological model is applied to understand the conversion efficiency as well as the quantum degeneracy of the molecules. In addition, I present a study of boson+molecule collision rates and Bose-Bose-Fermi collision rates in order to observe signatures of Efimov states and compare against results in the gas mixture 41K-87Rb to address the question of universality of the three-body parameter in heteronuclear gas mixtures.

Quantum information flow in impurity qubits interacting with Bose-Bose mixtures

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Lan Xu, Qing-Shou Tan

We investigate the dynamics of quantum information flow in one and two impurity qubits trapped in a double-well potential and interacting with a one-dimensional ultracold Bose-Bose mixture reservoir. For a single qubit immersed in a binary Bose mixture, we show that the system maintains coherence over finite timescales and exhibits non-Markovian dynamics, particularly in the upper branch of the environment. We explore the transition from Markovian to non-Markovian dephasing through the Ohmicity of the spectral density functions, which are significantly influenced by interspecies interactions. In the case of two spatially separated qubits coupled to the Bose-Bose mixture reservoir, we demonstrate that collective decoherence affects the system dynamics, leading to prolonged coherence survival in both branches of the mixture. The intricate evolution of the decoherence factors is reflected in the density spectral functions and their Ohmicity characteristics. We find that the decoherence functions and spectra oscillate with increasing distance between the qubits, modifying the information flow dynamics. Additionally, we conduct a thorough investigation of the entanglement dynamics between the two qubits induced by the binary Bose mixture reservoir in both branches, underscoring the critical role of interspecies interactions.

Unitary boson-boson and boson-fermion mixtures: third virial coefficient and three-body parameter on a narrow Feshbach resonance

Shimpei Endo, Yvan Castin

We give exact integral expressions of the third cluster or virial coefficients of binary mixtures of ideal Bose or Fermi gases, with interspecies interactions of zero range and infinite s-wave scattering length. In general the result depends on three-body parameters Rt appearing in three-body contact conditions, because an Efimov effect is present or because the mixture is in a preefimovian regime with a mass ratio close to an Efimov effect threshold. We give a new, exact integral expression of Rt for the microscopic narrow Feshbach resonance model. A divergence of Rt in the preefimovian regime at a scaling exponent s = 1/2 is predicted and physically discussed. The analytical results are applied to typical species used in cold atom experiments.
