Abstract

We successfully convert an entangled photonic degree of freedom between polarization and OAM while the photon is inside an optical fiber. Frequency dependent modal loss and temporal drifts are the major impairments to the conversion.

Impact of polarization dependent loss on the propagation of entangled photons over fiber optic links

Brian T. Kirby, Michael Brodsky

Quantum network functionalities rely on the distribution of entangled photons to remote nodes interconnected by optical fibers. Polarization dependent loss (PDL) could potentially impair transmissions of entangled photon pairs. We propose a compact model that accounts for the deleterious effect of PDL of any orientation.

Polarization-entanglement-conserving frequency conversion of photons

Entangled photons play a pivotal role in the distribution of quantum information in quantum networks. However, the frequency bands for optimal transmission and storage of photons are often not the same. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the coherent frequency conversion of photons entangled in their polarization, a widely used degree of freedom in photonic quantum information processing. We verify the successful entanglement conversion by violating a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality and fully characterize our near-perfect entanglement transfer using both state and process tomography. Our implementation is robust and flexible, making it a practical building block for future quantum networks.

Modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement in guided-wave parametric down-conversion

Mohammed F. Saleh, Bahaa E. A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

We examine the modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement properties of photon pairs generated in a nonlinear periodically poled two-mode waveguide (one-dimensional planar or two-dimensional circular) via nondegenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Any of the possible degrees of freedom---mode number, frequency, or polarization---can be used to distinguish the down-converted photons while the others serve as attributes of entanglement. Distinguishing the down-converted photons based on their mode numbers enables us to efficiently generate spectral or polarization entanglement that is either narrowband or broadband. On the other hand, when the generated photons are distinguished by their frequencies in a type-0 process, modal entanglement turns out to be an efficient alternative to polarization entanglement. Moreover, modal entanglement in type-II down-conversion may be used to generate a doubly entangled state in frequency and polarization.
