Abstract

In this paper, the problem of security in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system has been analysed in the presence of an eavesdropper in cognitive radio networks. Multiple primary and secondary users communicate with the primary and secondary receiver, respectively. The secrecy capacity at primary receiver (PR) and secondary receiver (SR) have been calculated. At first, we use zero-forcing (ZF) precoding at the relay which enhances the secrecy capacity of PR and SR by nullifying the impact of interference. Secondly, we use a scheme to improve the secrecy capacity of the PR and SR using the existing interference energy of the communication medium employing selective precoding (SP) at the relay. Finally, we employ phase alignment precoding (PAP) for further increase in the secrecy capacity for PR and SR by using the destructive part of interference. Our analysis shows that among the three precoding techniques, the best performance is achieved by using the PAP at the relay in terms of secrecy capacity, complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) and outage probability analysis.

Combined approach of zero forcing precoding and cooperative jamming: A secrecy tradeoff

W. Liu, M. Z. I. Sarkar, Tharmalingam Ratnarajah

We consider the problem of secret communication through cognitive relay assisted interference channels in which secondary user (SU) is allowed to transmit simultaneously with the primary user (PU) over the same channel instead of waiting for an idle channel which is traditional for a cognitive radio. We propose two cooperative jamming (CJ) schemes to improve the secrecy rate of cognitive interference channels, where the multiple antenna cognitive relay transmit weighted jamming signals to create additional interferences in the direction of eavesdropper with the purpose of confusing it. !n the first CJ scheme, transmitter has the knowledge of all the channel state information (CSI) including eavesdropper channel while in the second CJ scheme transmitter has no CSI of the eavesdropper channel. The proposed CJ schemes are designed to cancel out jamming interference at both the primary receiver (PR) and the secondary receiver (SR) maintaining interference at the PR under a certain threshold. CJ with full CSI enhances secrecy rate by employing zero forcing (ZF) precoding while CJ with partial CSI also combining with ZF precoding improves the secrecy rate by degrading the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) at the eavesdropper. Our results show that a combined approach of ZF precoding with CJ scheme is more significant in improving secrecy rate of cognitive interference channels for both full CSI and partial CSI scenarios.

Enhancing security in wireless multicasting with selective precoding

J. E. Giti, S. A. H. Chowdhury, M. M. Ali

We consider the problem of secure wireless multicasting through multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio system in which two co-existing users communicate with two groups of receivers in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. At first, we calculate the secrecy multicast capacity of each group and investigate the impact of interferences on it. We also quantify the loss of secrecy multicast capacity due to interferences. Then, we use zero-forcing (ZF) precoding at a relay to enhance the secrecy multicast capacity of each group by eliminating interferences. Finally, we propose a scheme to improve the secrecy multicast capacity of each group making use of interference energy that already exists in the communication medium employing selective precoding at the relay. In the proposed scheme, interference provides an additional source of energy that enhances secrecy multicast capacity at each group without the need to increase the transmitted power. Our results show that exploiting free interference power, the performance of co-existing wireless multicasting can be improved without affecting the performance of each other.

At first, we calculate the secrecy multicast capacity of each group and investigate the impact of interferences on it. Proposed relay selection scheme for physical layer security in cognitive radio networks

Hefdhallah Yahya Sakran, M. Shokair, Omar A. Nasr +2 more

In this study, the physical layer security for cognitive radio network (CRN) will be investigated in which a secondary user transmitter (SU-Tx) sends confidential information to a SU receiver (SU-Rx) on the same frequency band of a primary user (PU) in the presence of an eavesdropper receiver. Moreover, relay selection scheme is proposed for the security constrained CRNs with single eavesdropper, multiple eavesdroppers and PUs. The proposed scheme selects a trusted decode and forward relay to assist the SU-Tx and maximise the achievable secrecy rate that is subjected to the interference power constraints at the PUs for the different number of eavesdroppers and PUs under available channel knowledge. The SU cooperates with relays only when a high secrecy rate is achieved. Secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability are the two performance metrics that are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme although asymptotic approximations of the secrecy outage probability are also derived. Simulation and analytical results demonstrate that the performance improvement of the proposed scheme reaches to the double relative to the conventional scheme for the secrecy capacity.

Maximizing Secrecy Capacity of Underlay MIMO-CRN Through Bi-Directional Zero-Forcing Beamforming

Nibedita Nandan, Sudhan Majhi, Hsiao‐Chun Wu

This paper presents the optimal physical-layer security scheme of both primary user (PU) and secondary user (SU) in the underlay multiple-input multiple-output cognitive-radio network (MIMO-CRN) by use of a bi-directional zero-forcing beamformer. The proposed new method enables the PU to communicate along with the SUs through a relay node without sacrificing their individual secrecy capacity, i.e., without causing interference to each other even in the presence of eavesdropper(s). In the first phase, a transmitting beamformer at the PU/SU transmitters and a receiving beamformer at the relay have been adopted to separate PU and SU data. In the second phase, a bi-directional beamformer has been applied to eradicate the necessity of involving artificial noise for preventing the active eavesdropper(s). To maximize the total secrecy capacity, a generalized non-linear optimization problem has been formulated and converted to a simplified constrained optimization problem by utilizing the beamformer and the associated subspace restriction. Then, this problem is solved by the Lagrangian method. Both theoretical and numerical analyses of the total and individual ergodic secrecy rates are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. The secrecy outage probability is also derived to evaluate the performance variations of our proposed scheme when the channel-estimation error occurs.
