An optogalvanic gas sensor based on Rydberg excitations

J Schmidt, Yannick Münzenmaier, Patrick Kaspar +6 more

Abstract We investigate the properties of a trace-gas sensing scheme based on Rydberg excitations at the example of an idealized model system. Rydberg states in thermal rubidium (Rb) are created using a 2-photon cw excitation. These Rydberg-excited atoms ionize via collisions with a background gas of nitrogen (N2). The emerging charges are then measured as an electric current, which is on the order of several picoampere. Due to the 2-photon excitation, this sensing method has a large intrinsic selectivity combined with a promising sensitivity of 10 ppb at an absolute concentration of 1 ppm. The determination of the detection limit is limited by the optical reference measurement but is at least 500 ppb.

Frequency evaluation of collimated blue light generated by wave mixing in Rb vapour

A. M. Akulshin, Christopher Perrella, Gar-Wing Truong +2 more

An evaluation of the absolute frequency and tunability of collimated blue light (CBL) generated in warm Rb vapour excited by low-power cw laser radiation at 780 nm and 776 nm has been performed using a Fabry–Perot interferometer and a blue diode laser. For the conditions of our experiments, the CBL tuning range is more than 250 MHz around the resonant frequency of the 85 Rb 5S 1/2 ( F = 3)→6P 3/2 ( F ′ = 4) transition. A simple technique for stabilizing the power and frequency of the CBL to within a few per cent and 10 MHz, respectively, is suggested and demonstrated.

Fine-structure mixing collisions of Rb(52D) excited in a two-photon transition using external-cavity cw diode laser

B. Bieniak, L. Cyrulinski, K. Fronc +7 more

We present an experimental study of fine structure (fs)- mixing in the 52D state of Rb, and details of construction and performance of an external cavity cw diode laser, developed to provide a light source at 778 nm for two-photon excitation of Rb(52D). Cross section for the fs-mixing Rb(52D5/2) yields Rb(52D3/2) in collisions with the ground state Rb(52S1/2) atoms was found to be 5.8 +/- 1.9 (DOT) 10-14 cm2.
