Many Electron Theory

Mark C. Jones

Abstract

S Raimes Amsterdam: North-Holland 1972 pp xi + 272 price $20·25 The author's rationale for this book is that there exists a gap between such undergraduate texts on solid state physics as his own Wave Mechanics of Electrons in Metals and the many body formulation of graphs and Green's functions used in more advanced treatises and research papers. This is not entirely true; Kittel's Quantum Theory of Solids, Mattuck's Guide to Feynman Diagrams in the Many Body Problem, Zinan's Elements of Advanced Quantum Theory and Fetter and Welecka's Quantum Theory of Many Particle Systems among others, have, to judge by their author's forewords, been aimed at filling the same gap – not without some success.

Quantum Mechanics of Many Body Systems

Sam F Edwards

D J Thouless New York: Academic 1972 pp xi + 242 price $13.50 This is the second edition of a text which has gained wide acceptance by workers in its field. It is an introduction to the subject rather than a comprehensive treatise and indeed the latter would be a near impossibility since many body theory now encompasses the greater part of theoretical physics outside the high energy region.

Quantum Field Theory of Solids: An Introduction

Alan Cottey

H P J Haken Amsterdam: North Holland 1976 pp xvi + 330 price $50.95 From the price, one expects this book to be an advanced specialised monograph. In fact the first 130 pages introduce nonrelativistic quantum field theory (QFT) at an elementary level.

Many Body Problems

J M Irvine

G E Brown Amsterdam: North Holland 1972 pp 232 price Dfl40, $12.50 Gerry Brown's latest contribution to the entertainment of physicists has arisen out of lectures given in Copenhagen, Princeton and Stony Brook over the past 12 years. Preliminary versions of the book have been available for several years in the form of Nordita lecture notes and have been of great value to graduate students and research workers in the field of many body physics.

Electrons in Atoms

Lewis Elton

By G. F. Lothian London: Butterworth and Co. Ltd . Pp. x + 196. Price 35s. 1963. There are already several books on the market which 'lead the university student to an understanding, fairly early in his course, of the way in which quantum theory answers the questions posed by experimental observations'. This, however, is not one of them, for although it covers an enormous amount of ground it is not likely to lead to real understanding.

Quantum Mechanics: New Approaches to Selected Topics

David L Hurd

H J Lipkin Amsterdam: North-Holland 1973 pp xv + 465 price Dfl 95 The author himself explains that this volume can be considered as a collection of self contained monographs, dealing with such topics as the Mossbauer effect (introducing ‘form factor physics‘), many body theory (second quantization techniques), kaon physics (applications of time-dependent perturbation theory), scattering theory, Feynman diagrams, and relativistic quantum mechanics. Concepts and techniques are presented with clarity, and their use well illustrated through application to problems of real physical interest.

The Many Body Problem

Roger Arthur Cowley

W E Parry London: Oxford University Press 1973 pp x + 213 price £6.25 The techniques which have been developed to describe the many body problem are now widely used in the theory of condensed matter and of nuclear and atomic structure. Because of this it is becoming increasingly important for both experimental and theoretical physicists in these fields to be familiar with these techniques.
