Quantum Mechanics of Many Body Systems

Sam F Edwards

Published Oct 1, 1973• 296 citations
Publisher

Abstract

D J Thouless New York: Academic 1972 pp xi + 242 price $13.50 This is the second edition of a text which has gained wide acceptance by workers in its field. It is an introduction to the subject rather than a comprehensive treatise and indeed the latter would be a near impossibility since many body theory now encompasses the greater part of theoretical physics outside the high energy region.

Many-Body Problems

W. H. Young

W E Turner et al. New York: Benjamin 1969 pp vii + 265, price £2 The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society has decided to have republished selected articles, with a common theme, from Reports on Progress in Physics . The present volume on many-body problems is such a venture and contains reviews entitled 'Green functions in statistical mechanics' (Parry and Turner 1964), 'Theory and applications of the density matrix' (ter Haar 1961), 'The equation of state of dense systems' (Rowlinson 1965), 'The theory of irreversible processes' (Chester 1963), 'Quantum theory of many-body systems' (Hugenholtz 1965) and 'The fluctuation-dissipation theorem' (Kubo 1966).

Intermediate Quantum Mechanics 2nd Edn

Ken J. Barnes

H A Bethe and B Jackiw New York: Benjamin 1968 pp ix + 393, price $11.00 This book is designed to meet the needs of students working through a second course of quantum mechanics. It is not a textbook on the fundamental theory, but is rather a down to earth treatment of the main applications to atomic physics.

Foundations of Quantum Theory

R. F. Streater

S Wieder New York: Academic Press 1973 pp xv + 399 price $13.95 This book is not really concerned with the foundations of quantum theory, in any mathematical or philosophical sense; rather, it is a textbook at the intermediate level aimed at physics students in their final undergraduate year. One might ask why it was written.

Quantum Mechanics

R. L. Hall

A. A. Sokolov, Y. M. Loskutov and I. M. Ternov London and New York: Holt, Rimehart ' Winston. 1966. Pp. xix + 537. Price £4 8s. This addition to the large number of available books on quantum mechanics is mainly of interest to the nonspecialist. The subject is introduced via elementary radiation theory, the Bohr atom and de Broglie waves, which lead to plausibility arguments for Schrodinger's equation.

Quantum Mechanics

M R C McDowell

Hendrik F Hameka 1981 New York: John Wiley xii + 387 pp price £24 This is a revised and updated version of the author's 1967 text Introduction to Quantum Mechanics. It was then thought particularly suitable for chemists, and indeed the new version has a flavour not unlike that of the classic Quantum Chemistry by Eyring, Walter and Kimball.

Quantum Mechanics: New Approaches to Selected Topics

David L Hurd

H J Lipkin Amsterdam: North-Holland 1973 pp xv + 465 price Dfl 95 The author himself explains that this volume can be considered as a collection of self contained monographs, dealing with such topics as the Mossbauer effect (introducing ‘form factor physics‘), many body theory (second quantization techniques), kaon physics (applications of time-dependent perturbation theory), scattering theory, Feynman diagrams, and relativistic quantum mechanics. Concepts and techniques are presented with clarity, and their use well illustrated through application to problems of real physical interest.
