Collective excitations of quasi-two-dimensional trapped dipolar fermions: Transition from collisionless to hydrodynamic regime

Mehrtash Babadi, Eugene Demler

We study the collective excitations of polarized single-component quasi-two-dimensional dipolar fermions in an isotropic harmonic trap by solving the collisional Boltzmann-Vlasov (CBV) equation via the method of moments. We study the response to monopole and quadrupole perturbations of the trap potential and investigate the dynamical character of excitations in each case. Simple analytic formulas are found using the linearized scaling ansatz approximation and accurate numerical results are obtained by satisfying the first eight moments of the CBV equation. Except for the lowest-lying monopole mode that is weakly affected by collisions, the quadrupole and the higher-order monopole modes undergo a transition from the collisionless regime to a dissipative crossover regime and finally approach the hydrodynamic regime upon increasing the dipolar interaction strength. For strong transverse confinement (2D limit), we predict the existence of a temperature window within which the characteristics of the collective modes become temperature independent. This plateau, which is a direct consequence of dipole-dipole scatterings, persists as long as the scattering energies remain in the near-threshold regime. The predictions of this work are expected to be observable in the current experiments.

Collective phenomena in a quasi-two-dimensional system of fermionic polar molecules: Band renormalization and excitons

Mehrtash Babadi, Eugene Demler

We theoretically analyze a quasi-two-dimensional system of fermionic polar molecules trapped in a harmonic transverse confining potential. The renormalized energy bands are calculated by solving the Hartree-Fock equation numerically for various trap and dipolar interaction strengths. The intersubband excitations of the system are studied in the conserving time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) approximation from the perspective of lattice modulation spectroscopy experiments. We find that the excitation spectrum consists of both intersubband particle-hole excitation continua and antibound excitons whose antibinding behavior is associated to the anisotropic nature of dipolar interactions. The excitonic modes are shown to capture the majority of the spectral weight. We evaluate the intersubband transition rates in order to investigate the nature of the excitonic modes and find that they are antibound states formed from particle-hole excitations arising from several subbands. We discuss the sum rules in the context of lattice modulation spectroscopy experiments and utilize them to check the consistency of the obtained results. Our results indicate that the excitonic effects persist for interaction strengths and temperatures accessible in the current experiments with polar molecules.

Low-lying excitations of vortex lattices in condensates with anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction

Lijuan Jia, Anbang Wang, Su Yi

We investigated the low-lying collective excitations of quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a rotating harmonic potential using the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. By varying the trap rotation frequency and dipolar interaction strength, we show how the anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction modifies the collective excitations of the condensates. In particular, under strong dipolar interaction, the vortex-displacement excitations differ significantly from the nondipolar case.
