The time-dependent correlation function of the Jordan–Wigner operator as a Fredholm determinant

Abstract

We calculate a correlation function of the Jordan–Wigner operator in a class of free-fermion models formulated on an infinite one-dimensional lattice. We represent this function in terms of the determinant of an integrable Fredholm operator, convenient for analytic and numerical investigations. By using Wick's theorem, we avoid the form-factor summation customarily used in the literature for treating similar problems.

Impurity Green's function of a one-dimensional Fermi gas

Oleksandr Gamayun, A. G. Pronko, Mikhail B. Zvonarev

We consider a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions interacting through δ-function repulsive potential of an arbitrary strength. For the case of all fermions but one having spin up, we calculate time-dependent two-point correlation function of the spin-down fermion. This impurity Green's function is represented in the thermodynamic limit as an integral of Fredholm determinants of integrable linear integral operators.

Dynamical correlation functions in the Ising field theory

István Csépányi, Márton Kormos

We study finite temperature dynamical correlation functions of the magnetization operator in the one-dimensional Ising quantum field theory. Our approach is based on a finite temperature form factor series and on a Fredholm determinant representation of the correlators. While for space-like separations the Fredholm determinant can be efficiently evaluated numerically, for the time-like region it has convergence issues inherited from the form factor series. We develop a method to compute the correlation functions at time-like separations based on the analytic continuation of the space-time coordinates to complex values. Using this numerical technique, we explore all space-time and temperature regimes in both the ordered and disordered phases including short, large, and near-light-cone separations at low and high temperatures. We confirm the existing analytic predictions for the asymptotic behavior of the correlations except in the case of space-like correlations in the paramagnetic phase. For this case we derive a new closed form expression for the correlation length that has some unusual properties: it is a non-analytic function of both the space-time direction and the temperature, and its temperature dependence is non-monotonic.

Correlation Functions for Impenetrable Bosons. The Determinant Representation

V. E. Korepin, N. M. Bogoliubov, Anatoli G. Izergin

Introduction Impenetrable bosons in one space dimension are a special case (at coupling constant c → ∞) of the one-dimensional Bose gas (NS model) considered in detail in Chapter I. The results obtained there for the NS model can be specialized to the case of impenetrable bosons. It is to be said that all the formulæe are considerably simplified in this case. From the point of view of physics this is due to the fact that the δ-function potentials in the N -particle Hamiltonian (I.1.11) are now infinitely strong and the bosons cannot penetrate one another, so that the wave function should be equal to zero if the bosons' coordinates coincide. In this respect impenetrable bosons are rather similar to free fermions (see Appendix I.I). In this chapter correlation functions of impenetrable bosons are considered and their representations as Fredholm determinants of linear integral operators are given. The (very essential) simplification with respect to the general case is due to the fact that now all the auxiliary quantum fields can be set equal to zero (see IX.6), so that the kernels of these operators do not contain quantum fields. The determinant representation for the time-dependent correlator is easy to obtain in this case. Temperature correlation functions are considered as well as zero temperature ones.

On the dynamics of free-fermionic tau-functions at finite temperature

Daniel Chernowitz, Oleksandr Gamayun

In this work we explore an instance of the \tau τ -function of vertex type operators, specified in terms of a constant phase shift in a free-fermionic basis. From the physical point of view this \tau τ -function has multiple interpretations: as a correlator of Jordan-Wigner strings, a Loschmidt Echo in the Aharonov-Bohm effect, or the generating function of the local densities in the Tonks-Girardeau gas. We present the \tau τ -function as a form-factors series and tackle it from four vantage points: (i) we perform an exact summation and express it in terms of a Fredholm determinant in the thermodynamic limit, (ii) we use bosonization techniques to perform partial summations of soft modes around the Fermi surface to acquire the scaling at zero temperature, (iii) we derive large space and time asymptotic behavior for the thermal Fredholm determinant by relating it to effective form-factors with an asymptotically similar kernel, and (iv) we identify and sum the important basis elements directly through a tailor-made numerical algorithm for finite-entropy states in a free-fermionic Hilbert space. All methods confirm each other. We find that, in addition to the exponential decay in the finite-temperature case the dynamic correlation functions exhibit an extra power law in time, universal over any distribution and time scale.

Effective free-fermionic form factors and the XY spin chain

Oleksandr Gamayun, N. Z. Iorgov, Yuri Zhuravlev

We introduce effective form factors for one-dimensional lattice fermions with arbitrary phase shifts. We study tau functions defined as series of these form factors. On the one hand we perform the exact summation and present tau functions as Fredholm determinants in the thermodynamic limit. On the other hand simple expressions of form factors allow us to present the corresponding series as integrals of elementary functions. Using this approach we re-derive the asymptotics of static correlation functions of the XY quantum chain at finite temperature.
