Abstract

We study the quantum correlation between the signal and pump modes in forward three-wave mixing in media with an intensity-dependent index of refraction, by adopting the semiclassical and the full-quantum theories. Strong positive correlation exists between the two signal modes, but there is strong anti-correlation between the signal modes and the pump. In the semiclassical model, the phase mismatched cases are investigated. In the full-quantum analysis, the effects of the pump quantization and losses are considered.

Generation of Squeezed States in Forward Three-Wave Mixing

Yajun Lü, Ling-An Wu, Meijuan Wu +1 more

We present a study of the generation of squeezed states through nonlinear three-wave mixing in media with an intensity-dependent index of refraction. In the semiclassical model, perfect squeezing for combination modes can be generated. Using the Fokker-Planck equation approach, the effects of pump (including squeezed pump) and loss are discussed. It is shown that the fluctuations of the pump place no fundamental limit to the degree of squeezing obtainable but losses do give an absolute limit.

Quantum correlation in photorefractive three-wave mixing: semiclassical approach

Yajun Lü, Ling-An Wu, Zhang Peilin +1 more

Quantum fluctuations of the fields for three-wave mixing in photorefractive media with drift nonlinearity and nonlocal response are investigated, using a semiclassical input-output theory. It is shown that quantum correlation and anticorrelation among the three modes will change according to the relative intensity ratio and the direction of energy transfer between the signal and reference modes. The fluctuations in the intensity difference of the two signal modes can be reduced below the corresponding shot-noise level.

Quantum theory of resonantly enhanced four-wave mixing: Mean-field and exact numerical solutions

Mattias Johnsson, Michael Fleischhauer

We present a full quantum analysis of resonant forward four-wave mixing based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In particular, we study the regime of efficient nonlinear conversion with low-intensity fields that has been predicted from a semiclassical analysis. We derive an effective nonlinear interaction Hamiltonian in the adiabatic limit. In contrast to conventional nonlinear optics, this Hamiltonian does not have a power expansion in the fields and the conversion length decreases with decreasing input power. We analyze the stationary wave-mixing process in the forward scattering configuration using an exact numerical analysis for up to ${10}^{3}$ input photons and compare the results with a mean-field approach. Due to quantum effects, complete conversion from the two pump fields into the signal and idler modes is achieved only asymptotically for large coherent pump intensities or for pump fields in few-photon Fock states. The signal and idler fields are perfectly quantum correlated which has potential applications in quantum communication schemes. We also discuss the implementation of a single-photon phase gate for continuous quantum computation.

Theory of multiwave mixing in two- and three-level media.

Sunghyuck An

This dissertation presents theories of multiwave mixing in two- and three-level media. The first part of the dissertation treats the semiclassical theories in two-level media. Chapter 2 gives the simple semiclassical theory of four-wave mixing when the two pump frequences differ by more than the reciprocal of the population-difference lifetime. This difference washes out the pump spatial holes as well as one of the two reflection gratings. We compare the results to the degenerate treatment of Abrams and Lind and find significant differences in the reflection coefficient spectra. Chapter 3 presents the semiclassical theory of multiwave in a squeezed vacuum characterized by unequal in-phase and in-quadrature dipole decay times. For a highly squeezed vacuum, we find sharp resonances in both probe absorption and reflection coefficients, which provide sensitive ways to measure the amount of squeezing in the vacuum. The second part of the dissertation treats the quantum theories in two- and three-level media. Chapter 4 develops the fourth-order quantum theory of multiwave mixing to describe the effects of sidemode saturation in two-level media. We derive explicit formulas for the fourth-order quantum coefficients and show that the fourth-order quantum theory reproduces the third-order semiclassical coefficient obtained by truncating a continued fraction. We apply the results to cavity problems and find significant differences in the sideband spectra given by the second- and fourth-order treatments, particularly as the sidemode approaches the laser threshold. The final chapter presents a quantum theory of multiwave mixing in three-level cascades with a two-photon pump. The explicit formulas for the resonance fluorescence spectrum and the quantum combination-tone source term are derived. The theory is applied to the generation of squeezed states of light. We find almost perfect squeezing for some strong pump intensities and good broad-band squeezing for low pump intensities.

Spatial pump-meter quantum correlations in a vectorial Kerr-medium model

M. Hoyuelos, Alice Sinatra, Pere Colet +2 more

We consider a vectorial Kerr-medium model including transverse spatial effects. We analyze cases in which, immediately above the threshold of the spatial instability, the homogeneous pump wave gives rise to two tilted waves corresponding to a stripe pattern in the near field. We analyze both the self-focusing and the self-defocusing case and we point out the existence of anti-correlations between the quantum fluctuations of the intensity of the pump and the sum of the intensities of the two tilted waves creating the transverse pattern in the near field. We also evaluate the efficiency of this scheme as a quantum nondemolition (QND) scheme which uses the tilted waves as a ``meter'' to measure the intensity fluctuations of the pump. Our results show the posibility of a QND measurement in the self-defocusing case. In this case, and for a linearly polarized pump, the output pump beam (uniform in the transverse plane) and the pattern have orthogonal polarization and could be easily separated experimentally.
