Non-Markovian dynamics and entanglement evolution of a qubit in a spin environment

Abstract

The dynamics of a central spin-1/2 in presence of a local magnetic field and a bath of N spin-1/2 particles is studied in the thermodynamic limit. The interaction between the spins is Heisenberg XY type and the bath is considered to be a perfect thermal reservoir. In this case, the evolution of the populations of the reduced density matrix is obtained for different temperatures. A Born approximation is made but not a Markov approximation resulting a non-Markovian dynamics. The measure of the entanglement between the spin and the bath is obtained by means of the von Neumann entropy. For low temperatures, results show that there are oscillations of populations and of the von Neumann entropy as measure of entanglement, indicating that the central spin becomes disentangled of the spins of the bath with characteristic time periods in which it is possible to extract or recuperate information. In the regime of high temperatures, the evolution shows a final maximum entangled state with entropy S = ln 2 as it is expected for a two level system. I

Non-Markovian reduced dynamics and entanglement evolution of two coupled spins in a quantum spin environment

Xiao-Zhong Yuan, Hsi‐Sheng Goan, Ka-Di Zhu

The exact quantum dynamics of the reduced density matrix of two coupled spin qubits in a quantum Heisenberg $XY$ spin star environment in the thermodynamic limit at arbitrarily finite temperatures is obtained using an operator technique. In this approach, the transformed Hamiltonian becomes effectively Jaynes-Cumming-like and thus the analysis is also relevant to cavity quantum electrodynamics. This special operator technique is mathematically simple and physically clear, and allows us to treat systems and environments that could all be strongly coupled mutually and internally. To study their entanglement evolution, the concurrence of the reduced density matrix of the two coupled central spins is also obtained exactly. It is shown that the dynamics of the entanglement depends on the initial state of the system and the coupling strength between the two coupled central spins, the thermal temperature of the spin environment, and the interaction between the constituents of the spin environment. We also investigate the effect of detuning, which in our model can be controlled by the strength of a locally applied external magnetic field. It is found that the detuning has a significant effect on the entanglement generation between the two-spin qubits.

Non-Markovian Reduced Dynamics and Entanglement Evolution of Central Spin Models in Quantum Spin Environments

Hsi‐Sheng Goan

We discuss two central spin models coupled, respectively, to a quantum Heisenberg XY spin star environment [1] and to an antiferromagnetic environment [2]. In the first model [1], the exact quantum dynamics of the reduced density matrix of two coupled spin qubits in a quantum Heisenberg XY spin star environment in the thermodynamic limit at arbitrarily finite temperatures is obtained using a novel operator technique. In this approach, the transformed Hamiltonian becomes effectively Jaynes-Cumming like and thus the analysis is also relevant to cavity quantum electrodynamics. Non-Markovian qubit dynamics in a thermal field bath: Relaxation, decoherence, and entanglement

Sanjiv Shresta, Charis Anastopoulos, Adrian A. Drǎgulescu +1 more

We study the non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit made up of a two-level atom interacting with an electromagnetic field (EMF) initially at finite temperature. Unlike most earlier studies where the bath is assumed to be fixed, we study the complete evolution of the combined qubit-EMF system, thus allowing for the coherent backaction from the bath on the qubit and the qubit on the bath in a self-consistent manner. In this way we can see the development of quantum correlations and entanglement between the system and its environment, and how that affects the decoherence and relaxation of the system. We find nonexponential decay for both the diagonal and nondiagonal matrix elements of the qubit's reduced density matrix in the pointer basis. The former shows the qubit relaxing to thermal equilibrium with the bath, while the latter shows the decoherence rate beginning at the usually predicted thermal rate, but changing to the zero-temperature value as the qubit and bath become entangled. The decoherence and relaxation rates are comparable, as in the zero-temperature case. On the entanglement of a qubit with the EMF we calculated the fidelity and the von Neumann entropy, which is a measure of the purity of the density matrix. The present more accurate non-Markovian calculations predict lower loss of fidelity and purity as compared with the Markovian results. Generally speaking, with the inclusion of quantum correlations between the qubit and its environment, the non-Markovian processes tend to slow down the drive of the system to equilibrium, prolonging the decoherence and better preserving the fidelity and purity of the system.

Dynamics and thermodynamics of a central spin immersed in a spin bath

Chiranjib Mukhopadhyay, Samyadeb Bhattacharya, Avijit Misra +1 more

An exact reduced dynamical map along with its operator sum representation is derived for a central spin interacting with a thermal spin environment. The dynamics of the central spin shows high sustainability of quantum traits such as coherence and entanglement in the low-temperature regime. However, for sufficiently high temperature and when the number of bath particles approaches the thermodynamic limit, this feature vanishes and the dynamics closely mimics Markovian evolution. The properties of the long-time-averaged state and the trapped information of the initial state for the central qubit are also investigated in detail, confirming that the nonergodicity of the dynamics can be attributed to the finite temperature and finite size of the bath. It is shown that if a certain stringent resonance condition is satisfied, the long-time-averaged state retains quantum coherence, which can have far reaching technological implications in engineering quantum devices. An exact time-local master equation of the canonical form is derived. With the help of this master equation, the nonequilibrium properties of the central spin system are studied by investigating the detailed balance condition and irreversible entropy production rate. The result reveals that the central qubit thermalizes only in the limit of very high temperature and large number of bath spins.

Early stage disentanglement and non-Markovianity

Muzzamal Iqbal Shaukat, Amrozia Shaheen, A. H. Toor

We have studied an early stage disentanglement by solving an exactly solvable spin bath model in the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. In the Markovian regime, the central two qubit spins are non-interacting in which entanglement strongly depends on mean number of photon. In the non-Markovian regime, we solved by considering and ignoring the interaction between central two spins and observe that the entanglement strongly depends on the spin bath interaction, qubit spin interaction, bath spin interaction, thermal temperature and the initial state. Further, the concurrence of an initially unentangled state mixed with an entangled state also depends on the initial state.
