Abstract

An exact reduced dynamical map along with its operator sum representation is derived for a central spin interacting with a thermal spin environment. The dynamics of the central spin shows high sustainability of quantum traits such as coherence and entanglement in the low-temperature regime. However, for sufficiently high temperature and when the number of bath particles approaches the thermodynamic limit, this feature vanishes and the dynamics closely mimics Markovian evolution. The properties of the long-time-averaged state and the trapped information of the initial state for the central qubit are also investigated in detail, confirming that the nonergodicity of the dynamics can be attributed to the finite temperature and finite size of the bath. It is shown that if a certain stringent resonance condition is satisfied, the long-time-averaged state retains quantum coherence, which can have far reaching technological implications in engineering quantum devices. An exact time-local master equation of the canonical form is derived. With the help of this master equation, the nonequilibrium properties of the central spin system are studied by investigating the detailed balance condition and irreversible entropy production rate. The result reveals that the central qubit thermalizes only in the limit of very high temperature and large number of bath spins.

Dynamics of two central spins immersed in spin baths

Devvrat Tiwari, Shounak Datta, Samyadeb Bhattacharya +1 more

In this article we derive the exact dynamics of a two-qubit (spin $1/2$) system interacting centrally with separate spin baths composed of qubits in a thermal state. Furthermore, each spin of the bath is coupled to every other spin of the same bath. The corresponding dynamical map is constructed. It is used to analyze the non-Markovian nature of the two qubit central spin dynamics. We further observe the evolution of quantum correlations like entanglement and discord under the influence of the environmental interaction. Moreover, we demonstrate the comparison between this exact two-qubit dynamics and the locally acting central spin model in a spin bath. This work is a stepping stone towards the realization of non-Markovian heat engines and other quantum thermal devices.

Non-Markovian dynamics and entanglement evolution of a qubit in a spin environment

J. Rodríguez Garzón, Rafael Gutiérrez

The dynamics of a central spin-1/2 in presence of a local magnetic field and a bath of N spin-1/2 particles is studied in the thermodynamic limit. The interaction between the spins is Heisenberg XY type and the bath is considered to be a perfect thermal reservoir. In this case, the evolution of the populations of the reduced density matrix is obtained for different temperatures. A Born approximation is made but not a Markov approximation resulting a non-Markovian dynamics. The measure of the entanglement between the spin and the bath is obtained by means of the von Neumann entropy. For low temperatures, results show that there are oscillations of populations and of the von Neumann entropy as measure of entanglement, indicating that the central spin becomes disentangled of the spins of the bath with characteristic time periods in which it is possible to extract or recuperate information. In the regime of high temperatures, the evolution shows a final maximum entangled state with entropy S = ln 2 as it is expected for a two level system. I

Exact master equation for a spin interacting with a spin bath: Non-Markovianity and negative entropy production rate

Samyadeb Bhattacharya, Avijit Misra, Chiranjib Mukhopadhyay +1 more

An exact canonical master equation of the Lindblad form is derived for a central spin interacting uniformly with a sea of completely unpolarized spins. The Kraus operators for the dynamical map are also derived. The non-Markovianity of the dynamics in terms of the divisibility breaking of the dynamical map and the increase of the trace distance fidelity between quantum states is shown. Moreover, it is observed that the irreversible entropy production rate is always negative (for a fixed initial state) whenever the dynamics exhibits non-Markovian behavior. In continuation with the study of witnessing non-Markovianity, it is shown that the positive rate of change of the purity of the central qubit is a faithful indicator of the non-Markovian information backflow. Given the experimental feasibility of measuring the purity of a quantum state, a possibility of experimental demonstration of non-Markovianity and the negative irreversible entropy production rate is addressed. This gives the present work considerable practical importance for detecting the non-Markovianity and the negative irreversible entropy production rate.

Dynamics and thermalization in a simple mesoscopic fermionic bath

Michael. Mwalaba, Ilya Sinayskiy, Francesco Petruccione

We consider a central fermion strongly interacting with a surrounding mesoscopic bath of fermions which is weakly coupled to a Markovian bath of fermions. The master equation of the system consisting of the central fermion and the mesoscopic bath is derived, and based on this master equation, the reduced dynamics and thermalization of the central fermion are investigated. As probes for studying the dynamics and thermalization, the mean number of the central fermion and the current density are calculated. The observed dynamics reveal that strong coupling strength induces non-Markovian behavior and that in the long time limit thermalization is attained leaving the central fermion in a thermal state that is described by the corresponding Gibbs distribution. Upon attaining the thermal state, the central fermion is found to be entangled with the collective mode of the surrounding mesoscopic bath in the high-temperature regime, whereas in the low-temperature regime, it is found to undergo sudden death of entanglement.

Strong coupling non-Markovian quantum thermodynamics of a finite-bath system

Devvrat Tiwari, Baibhab Bose, Subhashish Banerjee

The focus is on understanding the quantum thermodynamics of strongly coupled non-Markovian quantum systems. To this end, a non-trivial, non-Markovian model of a central spin surrounded by a spin bath is taken up, and its exact evolution is derived for arbitrary system-bath couplings. The fundamental quantum thermodynamic quantities, such as system and bath internal energies, work, heat, entropy production, and ergotropy, are calculated using the dynamics and the original system (bath) Hamiltonian. An explicit expression for the work, a mismatch between the system and bath internal energies, is derived. The thermodynamic entropy of the system at thermal equilibrium is studied using the Hamiltonian of mean force in the strong coupling regime. The role of a canonical Hamiltonian in calculating the above thermodynamic quantities, a recently developed technique, is also investigated. Furthermore, an interesting observation relevant to the spin bath acting as a charger is made in a scenario where the central spin is envisaged as a quantum battery.

Nonadiabatic evolution and thermodynamics of a time-dependent open quantum system

Dan Wang, Dazhi Xu

We investigate the dynamic evolution and thermodynamic process of a driven quantum system immersed in a finite-temperature heat bath. A Born-Markovian quantum master equation is formally derived for the time-dependent system with discrete energy levels. This quantum master equation can be applied to situations with a broad range of driving speeds and bath temperatures and thus be used to study the finite-time quantum thermodynamics even when nonadiabatic transition and dissipation coexist. The dissipative Landau-Zener model is analyzed as an example. The population evolution and transition probability of the model reveal the importance of the competition between driving and dissipation beyond the adiabatic regime. Moreover, local maxima of irreversible entropy production occur at intermediate sweep velocity and finite temperature, which the low-dissipation model cannot describe.
