Abstract

A scheme is suggested in this paper, by which squeezed state light can be radiated from lasers directly via non-degenerate backward four wave mixing in laser cavities. Full quantum theory calculations predict that the output light shows good squeezing.

Squeezed-state generation via forward degenerate four-wave mixing

Prem Kumar, Jeffrey H. Shapiro

Degenerate four-wave mixing has been suggested as a possible generation scheme for squeezed-state light. A recent analysis of the quantum effects of probe-conjugate loss in backward degenerate four-wave mixing has shown that such loss puts an absolute limit on the squeezing that can be obtained via this generation scheme. In this Rapid Communication we show that it is the counter-propagating beam geometry of backward degenerate four-wave mixing that makes it ill suited for squeezed-state generation. On the other hand, the nominally copropagating beam geometry of forward degenerate four-wave mixing is shown to alleviate the absolute probe-conjugate loss limit on squeezing.

Generation of squeezed states via degenerate four-wave mixing

M. D. Reid, Daniel F. Walls

A microscopic model of degenerate four-wave mixing including the quantization of the medium is given. Thus the full effects of loss and spontaneous emission on the squeezing attainable are analyzed. We examine separately the squeezing in the output fields for counterpropagating four-wave mixing, copropagating four-wave mixing, and four-wave mixing in a single-ended optical ring cavity. Good squeezing is possible only in certain limits of atomic parameters.

GENERATION OF PULSED SQUEEZED LIGHT FIELD VIA FORWARD FOUR-WAVE MIXING

Lin-sheng He, JIANG HAI-HE, XIA YU-XING +1 more

A scheme is proposed, in which the pulse train of squeezed light is generated via forward four-wave mixing through a nonlinear medium with third-order polarizability, coherently pumped by a train of pulses of modelocked laser. One of the quadrature noise compoments of the squeezed light is measured with a balanced homodyne detector using a pulse train as the local oscillation. The theoretical results show that the fairly high-intensity output of squeezed light can be achieved, and the noise-power spectrum of the light is almost completely squeezed and exhibits the form of a train of pulses, but the shape of squeezed spectrum is reversed with respect to that of the pulse train of the input light.

The generation of a squeezed state via non-degenerate four-wave mixing in a system of three-level atoms is discussed. The condition for receiving a nearly perfect squeezing is shown.

Quantum theory of nondegenerate multiwave mixing

Seng‐Tiong Ho, Prem Kumar, Jeffrey H. Shapiro

Recently there has been much interest in the quantum theory of multiwave mixing in atomic media, partly due to the promise of generating squeezed states of light using four-wave mixing (FWM) schemes, which need a quantized electro-magnetic-field theory to assess the effect of propagation loss and spontaneous emission on squeezing. In fact, squeezed states have recently been observed in an intracavity nondegenerate backward FWM experiment in an atomic beam of sodium.1

Quantum Statistics of Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing

M. D. Reid, Daniel F. Walls

Four-wave mixing has been proposed as a likely candidate to produce squeezed states of light.1 Present experimental proposals favor four-wave mixing in an atomic medium. For this reason we have investigated the effect of the quantization of the atomic medium on the squeezing in the output field.
