Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the binomial state of a two-level atomic system, which is a state that yields a binomial probability distribution. Its generation, squeezing, antibunching, and subpoisson statistics are discussed. It reduces to the Glauber coherent state in certain limit, and in that limit, the binomial distribution reduces to the Poisson distribution. This limiting process destroys all nonclassical effects of the system. The Bloch vector model is used to discuss the quantum characters of mixed state of one atom. Finally, the binomial state of the atomic system and the binomial state of the Bose system is compared. It is shown that the binomial state of a Bose system can not be produced in a atomic system.

Binomial States of the Quantized Radiation Field

David Stoler, Bahaa E. A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

We introduce the binomial state of the quantized radiation field, which is a state that yields a binomial counting probability distribution. It reduces to the coherent state and to the number state in different limits. The binomal state is quantum mechanical in nature, and we show that it produces light that is antibunched, sub-poissonian, and squeezed for certain parameter ranges. A mixed binomial state is also defined. Particular attention is devoted to the mixed Bernoulli state which is an important special case. The properties of this mixed state indicate that squeezing might be present in individual atomic emissions.

THE PROPERTIES OF DISPLACED BINOMIAL STATES AND DISPLACED NEGATIVE BINOMIAL STATES AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH TWO-LEVEL ATOMS

Xiaoguang Wang, YU Rong-jin, LI WEN +1 more

In this article, we propose two new quantum field states, displaced binomial state and displaced negative binomial state. Their photon number distributions and sub-Poissonian properties are discussed. The results show that the displaced binomial state is a kind of intermediate quantum state between the coherent state and displaced number state and it may be sub-Poissonian and super-Poissonian at different parameters. The displaced negative binomial state is always super-Poissonian and is an intermediate state between coherent state and displaced Sussking-Glogower phased state. Finally, we study the dynamical evolution of atomic population inversion in the intensity-dependent interaction between these two states and two-level atoms.

Effects of the Binomial Field Distribution on Collapse and Revival Phenomena in the Jaynes-Cummings Model

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

The dynamical properties of a two-level atom interacting with a single non-decaying mode of an electromagnetic field in a binomial state are studied. The statistical aspects of the field, such as intensity-intensity correlation and squeezing, are also investigated. The binomial state reduces to a pure number state and a pure coherent state in different limits. Hence it enables us to study how the sinusoidal Rabi oscillations in a pure number state develop to give rise to the phenomenon of collapse and revival which has been studied extensively in the coherent-state field. In addition, the binomial state exhibits squeezing for certain values of parameters, but it is not a minimum-uncertainty-product state.

QUANTUM STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF THE EVEN AND ODD NEGATIVE BINOMIAL STATES

Xiaoyan Zhang, Ji‐Suo Wang, Xiang‐Guo Meng +1 more

The properties of the even and odd negative binomial states are investigated. Mainly we concentrate on the statistical properties for such states and we consider the squeezing phenomenon by examining the variation in the quadrature variances. Using the Pegg–Barnett formalism of phase operator, the phase probability distributions of the states are discussed, and also the phase and number squeezing with different parameters are studied. The numerical computation results show that the phase probability distributions for the even and odd NBSs can clearly exhibit the different features of quantum effects.

Quantum Electrodynamics of a Rydberg Atom Making Two-photon Transitions in the Binomial State of the Field in a Lossless Cavity

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

The dynamic and statistical properties of a system of an effective two-level atom making two-photon transitions in the binomial state of the field in a lossless cavity are discussed. The binomial state enables the study of the development of the phenomenon of collapses and revivals of the Rabi oscillations as the field state is changed from a pure number state to a coherent state. This is because the binomial state, which is a pure number state in one limit, develops into a coherent state as some parameters are changed appropriately. The effect of Stark shifts arising due to the transitions to virtual levels are also investigated.

NONCLASSICAL PROPERTIES AND HOLE BURNING IN THE REAL AND IMAGINARY BINOMIAL STATES

Jing Liao, Xiaoguang Wang, Ling-An Wu +1 more

We study the nonclassical properties of the real and imaginary binomial states formed by a superposition of the binomial states of Stoler et al. Their sub-Poissonian statistics and squeezing properties are studied in detail. These states have holes in the photon-number distribution, due to quantum interference between the two conjugate components. The corresponding ladder operator formalisms of these states are given.
