Abstract

© Kazan Federal University (KFU). We derive the dynamical spin susceptibility in the t-J-G model combining the random phase approximation (RPA) and projection operator method, which allows describing the mutual interplay between the local and the itinerant components of susceptibility. Near the antifer- romagnetic wave vector the calculated dispersion of the spin excitations reproduces well the so-called hour-glass dispersion, characteristic for several layered cuprates. It is formed as a result of competition between the original spin-gap in magnon-like excitations spectrum and the superconducting gap, which affects the itinerant component of the susceptibility. Further- more, the calculated collective spin excitations along (0, 0)-(0, π) are in agreement with the positions of the absorption peaks in the inelastic X-ray scattering spectra. They refer to the paramagnon-like modes, characteristic to the itinerant spin system, rather than magnon-like excitations that originate from short range order effect in the system of local spins at Cu sites.

Spin susceptibilities for the Hubbard model in a band approach

Alexander A. Ovchinnikov, M. Ya. Ovchinnikova

The properties of spin excitations superposed on a uniform ground state with antiferromagnetic (or spiral) spin structure are studied in a 2 D Hubbard model. Expressions are derived for the spin susceptibility in the random phase approximation (RPA) using split Hubbard bands as a zeroth approximation. The calculated collective modes with dispersion ω ( Q )= c | Q −(π, π)| near Q ∼(π, π) reproduce well the characteristics of the spin excitations observed in undoped cuprates. For doped systems with an antiferromagnetic structure of the ground state, calculating X ″( Q,ω →0) gives the same mode with a peak at Q ∼(π, π), regardless of the type of Fermi surface. It is shown that in doped systems with a spiral ground state spin structure, X ″( Q,ω →0) peaks occur with incommensurate quasimomenta Q that are coupled to the spirality vector.

One- and Two-Particle Correlation Functions in the Cluster Perturbation Theory for Cuprates

V. I. Kuz’min, Sergey V. Nikolaev, M. M. Korshunov +1 more

The physics of high-Tc superconducting cuprates is obscured by the effect of strong electronic correlations. One way to overcome this problem is to seek an exact solution at least within a small cluster and expand it to the whole crystal. Such an approach is at the heart of cluster perturbation theory (CPT). Here, we developed CPT for the dynamic spin and charge susceptibilities (spin-CPT and charge-CPT), with the correlation effects explicitly taken into account by the exact diagonalization. We applied spin-CPT and charge-CPT to the effective two-band Hubbard model for the cuprates obtained from the three-band Emery model and calculated one- and two-particle correlation functions, namely, a spectral function and spin and charge susceptibilities. The doping dependence of the spin susceptibility was studied within spin-CPT and CPT-RPA, that is, the CPT generalization of the random phase approximation (RPA). In the underdoped region, both our methods resulted in the signatures of the upper branch of the spin excitation dispersion with the lowest excitation energy at the (π,π) wave vector and no presence of low-energy incommensurate excitations. In the high doping region, both methods produced a low energy response at four incommensurate wave vectors in qualitative agreement with the results of the inelastic neutron scattering experiments on overdoped cuprates.

Theory of two-particle excitations and the magnetic susceptibility in high-T c cuprate superconductors

S. Brehm, Enrico Arrigoni, Markus Aichhorn +1 more

Two-particle (2-p) excitations such as spin and charge excitations play a key role in high- T c cuprate superconductors (HTSC). On the basis of a parameter-free theory, which extends the variational cluster approach (a recently developed embedded cluster method) to 2-p excitations, the magnetic excitations of HTSC are shown to be reproduced for a Hubbard model within the relevant strong-coupling regime. In particular, the resonance mode in the underdoped regime, its intensity and "hour-glass" dispersion are in good overall agreement with experiments.

Collective spin and charge excitations in the t-J-U model of high- Tc cuprates

Maciej Fidrysiak, Danuta Goc-Jagło, Józef Spałek

The t-J-U model of high-Tc copper-oxide superconductors incorporates both the on-site Coulomb repulsion and kinetic exchange interaction and yields a semi-quantitative description of the static properties of those materials. We extend this analysis to dynamic quantities and address collective spin- and charge excitations in the correlated metallic state of the t-J-U model. We employ VWF+1/Nf approach that combines the variational wave function (VWF) approach with the expansion in the inverse number of fermionic flavors (1/Nf). It is shown that the resonant (paramagnon) contribution to the dynamic magnetic susceptibility remains robust as one interpolates between the Hubbard- and t-J-model limits, whereas the incoherent continuum undergoes substantial renormalization. Energy of the collective charge mode diminishes as the strong-coupling limit is approached. We also introduce the concept of effective kinetic exchange interaction that allows for a unified interpretation of magnetic dynamics in the Hubbard, t-J, and t-J-U models. The results are discussed in the context of recent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments for the high-Tc cuprates.

Electron-Hole Asymmetry of Quantum Collective Excitations in High-Tc Copper Oxides

Maciej Fidrysiak

We carry out a systematic study of collective spin and charge excitations for the canonical single-band Hubbard, t–J–U, and t–J models of high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors, both on electron- and hole-doped side of the phase diagram. A~recently developed variational wave function approach, combined with the expansion in the inverse number of fermionic flavors, is employed. All three models exhibit a substantial electron–hole asymmetry of magnetic excitations, with a robust paramagnon emerging for hole-doping, in agreement with available resonant inelastic X-ray scattering data for the cuprates. The t–J model yields additional high-energy peak in the magnetic spectrum that is not unambiguously identified in spectroscopy. For all considered Hamiltonians, the dynamical charge susceptibility contains a coherent mode for both hole- and electron doping, with overall bandwidth renormalization controlled by the on-site Coulomb repulsion. Away from the strong-coupling limit, the antiferromagnetic ordering tendency is more pronounced on the electron-doped side of the phase diagram.

On the high energy spin excitations in the high temperature superconductors: an RVB theory

Jiquan Pei, Haijun Liao, Tao Li

The high energy spin excitation in the high T$_{c}$ cuprates is studied in the single mode approximation for the $t-t'-J$ model. An exact form for the mode dispersion is derived. When the Gutzwiller projected BCS state is used as the variational ground state, a spin-wave-like dispersion of about 2.2$J$ is uncovered along the $Γ=(0,0)$ to $\mathrm{M}=(π,0)$ line. Both the mode energy and the integrated intensity of the spin fluctuation spectrum are found to be almost doping independent in large doping range, which agrees very well with the observations of recent RIXS measurements. Together with previous studies on the quasiparticle properties of the Gutzwiiler projected BCS state, our results indicate that such a Fermionic RVB theory can provide a consistent description of both the itinerant and the local aspect of electronic excitations in the high T$_{c}$ cuprates.
