Abstract

N Bloembergen (ed) Amsterdam: North Holland 1977 pp xii + 455 price $61.25 This course on nonlinear spectroscopy is a worthy successor to other laser and maser courses, dating back to course XVII, ‘Topics in radiofrequency spectroscopy’. As with the other courses, these proceedings have been carefully edited and assembled into a coherent volume.

D F Walls and J D Harvey (eds) 1980 London: Academic xi + 287 pp price £16.90 This volume comprises 11 excellent chapters based on a summer school which must have succeeded in a thorough updating in laser physics. The aspects selected contain reviews of well established topics in laser physics, such as the statistical properties of light and light beating spectroscopy, as well as very topical subjects such as new excimer and free electron lasers, multiphoton excitation and optical bistability.
