Abstract

G Velo and A S Wightman (eds) 1981 New York: Plenum viii + 495 pp price $59.50 The 4th international school of mathematical physics was held at Erice, Sicily, in June 1980 and this book contains the lectures that were given there. The emphasis is on recent advances in the rigorous derivation of the properties of atoms and molecules, using the Schrödinger equation as a starting point.

Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Theory

T. W. B. Kibble

A R Marlow (ed) 1978 New York: Academic x + 372 pp price £14.30 This book contains papers presented at a conference held in New Orleans in June 1977, at which physicists and mathematicians came together to discuss the foundations of quantum mechanics. Some of the very mathematical articles will be of interest only to specialists, but others clearly show a real effort to communicate across the disciplinary barrier.

W Thirring and P Urban (eds) Vienna: Springer 1977 pp vii + 224 price $25.60 These two works have a common aim; to celebrate 50 years of quantum mechanics. The first book, edited by Lopes and Paty, arose from a colloquium which was held at the University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, in May 1974, in commemoration of the pioneering work by de Broglie in 1924.

A. A. Sokolov, Y. M. Loskutov and I. M. Ternov London and New York: Holt, Rimehart ' Winston. 1966. Pp. xix + 537. Price £4 8s. This addition to the large number of available books on quantum mechanics is mainly of interest to the nonspecialist. The subject is introduced via elementary radiation theory, the Bohr atom and de Broglie waves, which lead to plausibility arguments for Schrodinger's equation.

B D'Espagnat New York: Academic Press 1972 pp xiv + 480 price $29·50 The philosophical meaning of quantum mechanics has never been convincingly established. This volume, the proceedings of the Enrico Fermi summer school at Varenna in 1970, consists of articles presenting many different aspects and approaches to the problems, as well as many 'answers' written by distinguished scientists and logicians interested in these questions.

Quantum Mechanics of Many Body Systems

Sam F Edwards

D J Thouless New York: Academic 1972 pp xi + 242 price $13.50 This is the second edition of a text which has gained wide acceptance by workers in its field. It is an introduction to the subject rather than a comprehensive treatise and indeed the latter would be a near impossibility since many body theory now encompasses the greater part of theoretical physics outside the high energy region.
