Abstract

We create the first entangled state of more than two particles entangled in greater than two dimensions. Our state consists of three photons entangled in 3 × 3 × 2 dimensions of their orbital angular momentum.

Entangled W state of multi degree of freedom system based on orbital angular momentum

Fan Rong-Hua, Banghong Guo, Guo Jian-Jun +3 more

We propose a method of generating the three-photon W state. The method uses parametric down-conversion process and hybrid entanglement swapping from multiphoton spin-entangled states to multiphoton orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states, with the aid of a pair of polarization photons. They generate W state entangled in different degrees of freedom of polarization and OAM with a high-dimensional Hilbert space. By simply changing the methods of generating a polarization-OAM-linear momentum entangled W state. Our method produces two mutually symmetric W states with strong entanglement and high dimension, which is expected to realize the secure communication of extending quantum bits.

Conflict-free collective stochastic decision making by orbital angular momentum of photons through quantum interference

Takashi Amakasu, Nicolas Chauvet, Guillaume Bachelier +3 more

In recent cross-disciplinary studies involving both optics and computing, single-photon-based decision-making has been demonstrated by utilizing the wave-particle duality of light to solve multi-armed bandit problems. Furthermore, entangled-photon-based decision-making has managed to solve a competitive multi-armed bandit problem in such a way that conflicts of decisions among players are avoided while ensuring equality. However, as these studies are based on the polarization of light, the number of available choices is limited to two, corresponding to two orthogonal polarization states. Here we propose a scalable principle to solve competitive decision-making situations by using the orbital angular momentum of photons based on its high dimensionality, which theoretically allows an unlimited number of arms. Moreover, by extending the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect to more than two states, we theoretically establish an experimental configuration able to generate multi-photon states with orbital angular momentum and conditions that provide conflict-free selections at every turn. We numerically examine total rewards regarding three-armed bandit problems, for which the proposed strategy accomplishes almost the theoretical maximum, which is greater than a conventional mixed strategy intending to realize Nash equilibrium. This is thanks to the quantum interference effect that achieves no-conflict selections, even in the exploring phase to find the best arms.

Satellite-to-Ground Multi-dimensional Quantum Teleportation via Orbital Angular Momentum

Ziqing Wang, Robert Malaney, Ryan Aguinaldo

Quantum information transfer via high-dimensional encoding offers many potential advantages relative to the widely adopted two-dimensional encoding scenario. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of performing satellite-to-ground quantum entanglement distribution using photonic high-dimensional encoding. Specifically, we consider pairs of photons entangled in the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) discrete-variable bases. Through detailed simulations of the anticipated satellite-to-ground channel, we first investigate the performance of OAM entanglement distribution of varying dimensions. We then consider an application of such OAM distributed entanglement, namely, high-dimensional OAM quantum teleportation. Our work outlines, for the first time, the range of channel conditions and system configurations under which high-dimensional quantum teleportation via OAM encoding in the satellite-to-ground channel is possible.
