Abstract

Using the nonequilibrium Green's function method, the problem of thermal relaxation of systems interacting with a heat bath is investigated. We apply this method to the harmonic oscillator interacting with a heat bath which consists of many harmonic oscillators. Using with the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique we derive expressions for the the absorption and emission spectra. We also establish a connection to the the solution of the Heisenberg equation based on a fully quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian.

Vibrational spectroscopy of a harmonic oscillator system nonlinearly coupled to a heat bath

T. Kato, Yoshitaka Tanimura

Vibrational relaxation of a harmonic oscillator nonlinearly coupled to a heat bath is investigated by the Gaussian–Markovian quantum Fokker–Planck equation approach. The system–bath interaction is assumed to be linear in the bath coordinate, but linear plus square in the system coordinate modeling the elastic and inelastic relaxation mechanisms. Interplay of the two relaxation processes induced by the linear–linear and square–linear interactions in Raman or infrared spectra is discussed for various system–bath couplings, temperatures, and correlation times for the bath fluctuations. The one-quantum coherence state created through the interaction with the pump laser pulse relaxes through different pathways in accordance with the mechanisms of the system–bath interactions. Relations between the present theory, Redfield theory, and stochastic theory are also discussed.

Nonequilibrium nonlinear open quantum systems: Functional perturbative analysis of a weakly anharmonic oscillator

Jen-Tsung Hsiang, B. L. Hu

We introduce a functional perturbative method for treating weakly nonlinear systems coupled with a quantum field bath. We demonstrate using this method to obtain the covariance matrix elements and the correlation functions of a quantum anharmonic oscillator interacting with a heat bath. We identify a fluctuation-dissipation relation based on the nonequilibrium dynamics of this nonlinear open quantum system. To establish its connection with dynamical equilibration, we further examine the energy flows between the anharmonic oscillator and the bath field. The vanishing of the net flow is an indication of the existence of an equilibrium state for such an open-system configuration. The results presented here are useful for studying the nonequilibrium physical processes of nonlinear quantum systems such as heat transfer or electron transport.

Quantum Dynamics of Interacting oscillators in a thermal medium: A novel scheme

Ronak Moradi, Fardin Kheirandish

We develop an exact analytical framework for studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting quantum harmonic oscillators coupled to a modelled thermal reservoir and driven by external classical fields. The total Hamiltonian is diagonalized via successive Bogoliubov transformations, enabling a nonperturbative treatment of dissipation and driving. For two coupled oscillators with an external source applied to the first, we derive explicit energy expressions and analyze their dependence on coupling and bath parameters. The phase-space structure is characterized through Husimi $Q$-functions for initial separable coherent and number states. We obtain the reduced density matrix elements in the number-state basis and demonstrate that, in the absence of driving and at zero temperature, the reduced density matrix of the main system satisfies the Lindblad master equation. A generating function for the Husimi function is introduced to facilitate computation of higher-order correlations. The analysis is then generalized to $n$ interacting oscillators, with analytical energy expressions provided and the case $n=3$ examined in detail. Our results establish a versatile and exact framework for driven-dissipative quantum systems, with potential applications in quantum thermodynamics, open quantum systems, and many-body physics.

Nonequilibrium quantum fluctuation relations for harmonic systems in nonthermal environments

D Pagel, P. Nalbach, A Alvermann +2 more

We formulate exact generalized nonequilibrium fluctuation relations for the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator coupled to multiple harmonic baths. Each of the different baths is prepared in its own individual (in general nonthermal) state. Starting from the exact solution for the oscillator dynamics we study fluctuations of the oscillator position as well as of the energy current through the oscillator under general nonequilibrium conditions. In particular, we formulate a fluctuation-dissipation relation for the oscillator position autocorrelation function that generalizes the standard result for the case of a single bath at thermal equilibrium. Moreover, we show that the generating function for the position operator fullfills a generalized Gallavotti-Cohen-like relation. For the energy transfer through the oscillator, we determine the average energy current together with the current fluctuations. Finally, we discuss the generalization of the cumulant generating function for the energy transfer to nonthermal bath preparations.

We calculate the thermal correlation functions of the one-dimensional damped harmonic oscillator in contact with a reservoir, in an exact form by applying Green's function method. In this way the thermal fluctuations are incorporated in the Caldirola–Kanai Hamiltonian.

Krylov-space approach to the equilibrium and nonequilibrium single-particle Green’s function

Matthias Balzer, Nadine Gdaniec, Michael Potthoff

The zero-temperature single-particle Green's function of correlated fermion models with moderately large Hilbert-space dimensions can be calculated by means of Krylov-space techniques. The conventional Lanczos approach consists of finding the ground state in a first step, followed by an approximation for the resolvent of the Hamiltonian in a second step. We analyze the character of this approximation and discuss a numerically exact variant of the Lanczos method which is formulated in the time domain. This method is extended to obtain the nonequilibrium single-particle Green's function defined on the Keldysh-Matsubara contour in the complex time plane which describes the system's nonperturbative response to a sudden parameter switch in the Hamiltonian. The proposed method will be important as an exact-diagonalization solver in the context of self-consistent or variational cluster-embedding schemes. For the recently developed nonequilibrium cluster-perturbation theory, we discuss its efficient implementation and demonstrate the feasibility of the Krylov-based solver. The dissipation of a strong local magnetic excitation into a non-interacting bath is considered as an example for applications.
