Interplay between Non-Markovianity of Noise and Dynamics in Quantum Systems

Arzu Kurt

The non-Markovianity of open quantum system dynamics is often associated with the bidirectional interchange of information between the system and its environment, and it is thought to be a resource for various quantum information tasks. We have investigated the non-Markovianity of the dynamics of a two-state system driven by continuous time random walk-type noise, which can be Markovian or non-Markovian depending on its residence time distribution parameters. Exact analytical expressions for the distinguishability as well as the trace distance and entropy-based non-Markovianity measures are obtained and used to investigate the interplay between the non-Markovianity of the noise and that of dynamics. Our results show that, in many cases, the dynamics are also non-Markovian when the noise is non-Markovian. However, it is possible for Markovian noise to cause non-Markovian dynamics and for non-Markovian noise to cause Markovian dynamics but only for certain parameter values.

Global correlation and local information flows in controllable non-Markovian open quantum dynamics

Abstract In a fully-controllable experiment platform for studying non-Markovian open quantum dynamics, we show that the non-Markovianity could be investigated from the global and local aspects. By mixing random unitary dynamics, we demonstrate non-Markovian and Markovian open quantum dynamics. From the global point of view, by tuning the base frequency we demonstrate the transition from the Markovianity to the non-Markovianity as measured by the quantum mutual information (QMI). In a Markovian open quantum process, the QMI decays monotonically, while it may rise temporarily in a non-Markovian process. However, under some circumstances, it is not sufficient to globally investigate the non-Markovianity of the open quantum dynamics. As an essential supplement, we further utilize the quantum Fisher information (QFI) flow to locally characterize the non-Markovianity in different channels. We demonstrate that the QMI in combination with the QFI flow are capable of measuring the non-Markovianity for a multi-channel open quantum dynamics.

Investigating Non-Markovian Effects on Quantum Dynamics in Open Quantum Systems

Mariia Ivanchenko, Peter Walters, Fei Wang

The reduced description of the quantum dynamic processes in the condensed phase environment leads to the equation of motion with a memory kernel. Such a memory effect, termed non-Markovianity, presents more complex dynamics compared to its memoryless or Markovian counterpart, and many chemical systems have been demonstrated through numerical simulations to exhibit non-Markovian quantum dynamics. Explicitly how the memory impacts the dynamic process remains largely unexplored. In this work, we focus on ways to separate the non-Markovian contributions from the dynamics and study the non-Markovian effects. Specifically, we developed a rigorous procedure for mapping the exact non-Markovian quantum propagator to the Lindblad form. Consequently, it allows us to extract the negative decay rate from the Lindbladian that is the signature of the non-Markovianity. By including or excluding the negative rate in the time evolution, we can decisively pinpoint the influence of non-Markovianity on the system's properties such as coherence, entanglement, and equilibrium state distribution. The understanding of such memory effects on the dynamic process suggests the possibility of leveraging non-Markovianity for quantum control.
