Polar codes are a recently discovered family of capacity-achieving error-correcting codes. Among the proposed decoding algorithms, successive-cancellation list decoding guarantees the best error-correction performance with codes of moderate lengths, but it yields low throughput. Speed-up techniques have been proposed in the past: most of them rely on approximations that degrade the error-correction capability of the algorithm. We propose a speed-up technique for successive-cancellation list decoding of polar codes that is exact for list size of 2, while its approximations bring negligible error-correction performance degradation (<;0.05 dB) for other list sizes. A decoder architecture is designed: the proposed technique increases the throughput of a factor of 3.16×, at the cost of 14.2% in area occupation.

Polar codes are capacity achieving error correcting codes that can be decoded through the successive-cancellation algorithm. To improve its error-correction performance, a list-based version called successive-cancellation list (SCL) has been proposed in the past, that however substantially increases the number of time-steps in the decoding process. The simplified SCL (SSCL) decoding algorithm exploits constituent codes within the polar code structure to greatly reduce the required number of time-steps without introducing any error-correction performance loss. In this paper, we propose a faster decoding approach to decode one of these constituent codes, the Rate-1 node. We use this Rate-1 node decoder to develop Fast-SSCL. We demonstrate that only a list-size-bound number of bits needs to be estimated in Rate-1 nodes and Fast-SSCL exactly matches the error-correction performance of SCL and SSCL. This technique can potentially greatly reduce the total number of time-steps needed for polar codes decoding: analysis on a set of case studies show that Fast-SSCL has a number of time- steps requirement that is up to 66.6% lower than SSCL and 88.1% lower than SCL.

In this work, we present a simplified successive cancellation list decoder that uses a Chase-like decoding process to achieve a six time improvement in speed compared to successive cancellation list decoding while maintaining the same error-correction performance advantage over standard successive-cancellation polar decoders. We discuss the algorithm and detail the data structures and methods used to obtain this speed-up. We also propose an adaptive decoding algorithm that significantly improves the throughput while retaining the error-correction performance. Simulation results over the additive white Gaussian noise channel are provided and show that the proposed system is up to 16 times faster than an LDPC decoder of the same frame size, code rate, and similar error-correction performance, making it more suitable for use as a software decoding solution.
This work presents a fast successive-cancellation list flip (Fast-SCLF) decoding algorithm for polar codes that addresses the high latency issue associated with the successive-cancellation list flip (SCLF) decoding algorithm. We first propose a bit-flipping strategy tailored to the state-of-the-art fast successive-cancellation list (FSCL) decoding that avoids tree-traversal in the binary tree representation of SCLF, thus reducing the latency of the decoding process. We then derive a parameterized path selection error model to accurately estimate the bit index at which the correct decoding path is eliminated from the initial FSCL decoding. The trainable parameter is optimized online based on an efficient supervised learning framework. Simulation results show that for a polar code of length 512 with 256 information bits, with similar error-correction performance and memory consumption, the proposed Fast-SCLF decoder reduces up to 73.4% of the average decoding latency of the SCLF decoder with the same list size at the frame error rate of 10−4, while incurring a maximum computational complexity overhead of 27.6%. For the same polar code of length 512 with 256 information bits and at practical signal-to-noise ratios, the proposed decoder with list size 4 reduces 89.3% and 43.7% of the average complexity and decoding latency of the FSCL decoder with list size 32 (FSCL-32), respectively, while also reducing 83.2% of the memory consumption of FSCL-32. The significant improvements of the proposed decoder come at the cost of 0.07 dB error-correction performance degradation compared with FSCL-32.
Polar codes, as the first provable capacity-achieving error-correcting codes, have received much attention in recent years. However, the decoding performance of polar codes with traditional successive-cancellation (SC) algorithm cannot match that of the low-density parity-check or Turbo codes. Because SC list (SCL) decoding algorithm can significantly improve the error-correcting performance of polar codes, design of SCL decoders is important for polar codes to be deployed in practical applications. However, because the prior latency reduction approaches for SC decoders are not applicable for SCL decoders, these list decoders suffer from the long-latency bottleneck. In this paper, we propose a multibit-decision approach that can significantly reduce latency of SCL decoders. First, we present a reformulated SCL algorithm that can perform intermediate decoding of 2 b together. The proposed approach, referred as 2-bit reformulated SCL (2b-rSCL) algorithm, can reduce the latency of SCL decoder from (3n-2) to (2n-2) clock cycles without any performance loss. Then, we extend the idea of 2-b-decision to general case, and propose a general decoding scheme that can perform intermediate decoding of any 2Kbits simultaneously. This general approach, referred as 2K-bit reformulated SCL (2Kb-rSCL) algorithm, can reduce the overall decoding latency to as short as n/2K-2-2 cycles. Furthermore, on the basis of the proposed algorithms, very large-scale integration architectures for 2b-rSCL and 4b-rSCL decoders are synthesized. Compared with a prior SCL decoder, the proposed (1024, 512) 2b-rSCL and 4b-rSCL decoders can achieve 21% and 60% reduction in latency, 1.66 and 2.77 times increase in coded throughput with list size 2, and 2.11 and 3.23 times increase in coded throughput with list size 4, respectively.
Due to the ability to provide superior error-correction performance, the successive cancellation list (SCL) algorithm is widely regarded as one of the most promising decoding algorithms for polar codes with short-to-moderate code lengths. However, the application of SCL decoding in low-latency communication scenarios is limited due to its sequential nature. To reduce the decoding latency, developing tailored fast and efficient list decoding algorithms of specific polar constituent codes (special nodes) is a promising solution. Recently, fast list decoding algorithms are proposed by considering special nodes with low code rates. Aiming to further speedup the SCL decoding, this paper presents fast list decoding algorithms for two types of high-rate special nodes, namely single-parity-check (SPC) nodes and sequence rate one or single-parity-check (SR1/SPC) nodes. In particular, we develop two classes of fast list decoding algorithms for these nodes, where the first class uses a sequential decoding procedure to yield decoding latency that is linear with the list size, and the second further parallelizes the decoding process by pre-determining the redundant candidate paths offline. Simulation results show that the proposed list decoding algorithms are able to achieve up to 70.7% lower decoding latency than state-of-the-art fast SCL decoders, while exhibiting the same error-correction performance.
