Abstract

The paper discusses the theory of microwave resonance-line asymmetry in coherent population trapping (CPT) based frequency standards. Frequency errors caused by the asymmetry, and techniques for reducing the errors are described (patent pending).

Study of factors affecting the light shift of the CPT resonance

Dmitry S. Chuchelov, Eugene A. Tsygankov, Maria I. Vaskovskaya +4 more

Abstract Motivated by recent developments in atomic frequency standards employing the effect of coherent population trapping (CPT), we propose a theoretical framework for describing the CPT resonances. Our extended model includes several realistic experimental factors not accounted for in the standard approaches, namely, the FM-based technique for generating the error signal, skewed laser spectrum, etc. We provide a simple yet non-trivial analytical solution revealing the magnitude and structure of the light shift. The performance of the model is checked against numerical simulations, the agreement is good to perfect.

Dynamic Continuous-Wave Spectroscopy of Coherent Population Trapping at Phase-Jump Modulation

M. Yu. Basalaev, V.I. Yudin, A.V. Taichenachev +5 more

A method of dynamic continuous-wave spectroscopy of coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances using phase modulation of the jump type is developed. The time evolution of the spectroscopic signal is investigated. A method for the formation of an error signal for frequency stabilization is proposed. We show that our approach has a reduced sensitivity to the line-shape asymmetry of the CPT resonance. The experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on a mathematical model of a three-level $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ system in a bichromatic field. This method can be used in atomic frequency standards (including chip-scale atomic clocks).

Modulation-induced frequency shifts in a coherent-population-trapping-based atomic clock

We investigate systematic errors associated with a common modulation technique used for phase-sensitive detection of a coherent-population-trapping (CPT) resonance. In particular, we show that modification of the CPT resonance line shape due to the presence of off-resonant fields leads to frequency shifts that may limit the stability of CPT-based atomic clocks. We also demonstrate that an alternative demodulation technique greatly reduces these effects.

Practical Realization of a Passive Coherent Population Trapping Frequency Standard

Jaques Vanier, M. W. Levine, S. Kendig +3 more

The paper outlines the practical realization and characteristics of a small, totally autonomous passive frequency standard based on the coherent population trapping (CPT) phenomenon. The frequency standard, including physical characteristics, block diagrams of the optical control CPT resonance system and of the digital control electronics, is described. The characteristics of the frequency standard relative to general functionality and frequency stability are given, as measured on several units.
