Abstract

In this article, the authors have proposed a secure two-factor remote user authentication and session key agreement protocol. As they have shown in the presented scheme, is precise and secure according to both formal and informal security analysis. For formal security analysis, they have applied BAN (Burrows-Abadi-Needham) logic which certifies that the presented scheme provides the amenity of mutual authentication and session key agreement safely. The informal security verification has shown that the proposed scheme is more vigorous against various sort of cruel threats. Moreover, the authors have simulated the presented scheme using broadly accepted AVISPA tool, whose simulation results make sure that the protocol is not dangerous from active and passive attacks together with replay and man-in-the-middle attacks. In addition, the performance evaluation and the security comparison have revealed that the presented scheme gives strong security as well as better complexity in the context of smart card memory requirement, communication cost and computation cost.

A secure two-factor mutual authentication and session key agreement protocol using Elliptic curve cryptography

Preeti Chandrakar, Hari Om

In this paper, we propose a secure two-factor remote user authentication protocol using Elliptic curve cryptography. The proposed protocol provides the mutual authentication of participants, session key agreement and user anonymity. The security of our proposed protocol is based on one way hash function and elliptic curve cryptosystem and it is secure against all relevant security attacks. Compared with other relevant protocol, the security analysis and performance evaluation show that our proposed protocol can provide high level of security with less communication and computation cost. In addition, the BAN logic is applied to demonstrate the validity of the proposed protocol.

Cryptanalysis and security enhancement of a robust two‐factor authentication and key agreement protocol

Qi Xie, Na Dong, Duncan S. Wong +1 more

Summary Two‐factor user authentication scheme allows a user to use a smart card and a password to achieve mutual authentication and establish a session key between a server and a user. In 2012, Chen et al . showed that the scheme of Sood et al . does not achieve mutual authentication and is vulnerable to off‐line password guessing and smart card stolen attacks. They also found that another scheme proposed by Song is vulnerable to similar off‐line password guessing and smart card stolen attacks. They further proposed an improved scheme. In this paper, we first show that the improved scheme of Chen et al . still suffers from off‐line password guessing and smart card stolen attacks, does not support perfect forward secrecy, and lacks the fairness of session key establishment. We then propose a new security‐enhanced scheme and show its security and authentication using the formal verification tool ProVerif, which is based on applied pi calculus. Design of Mutually Authenticated Key Agreement Protocol Resistant to Impersonation Attacks for Multi-Server Environment

Alavalapati Goutham Reddy, Eun‐Jun Yoon, Ashok Kumar Das +2 more

Three-factor mutually authenticated key agreement protocols for multi-server environments have gained momentum in recent times due to advancements in wireless technologies and associated constraints. Several authors have put forward various authentication protocols for multi-server environment during the past decade. Wang et al. recently proposed a biometric-based authentication with key agreement protocol for multi-server environment and claimed that their protocol is efficient and resistant to prominent security attacks. The careful investigation of this paper shows that Wang et al. protocol's users are sharing personal identifiable information with the application servers during the registration and authentication process. This nature of disclosing credentials leads to severe threats particularly insider attacks, user impersonation attacks, and server impersonation attacks. As a remedy of the aforementioned problems, this paper proposes a novel biometric-based mutually authenticated key agreement protocols for multi-server architecture based on elliptic curve cryptography. We prove that the proposed protocol achieves secure mutual authentication property using the broadly used Burrows-Abadi-Needham logic. The formal security of the proposed protocol is verified using the widely accepted automated validation of Internet security protocols and applications tool to show that our protocol can withstand active and passive attacks including the replay and man-in-the-middle attacks. The proposed protocol is robust and efficient compared with the existing related protocols.

Multi-serverAnonymousRemoteAuthenticatedKeyAgreementProtocolBasedonSmartCard

李艳平, 刘小雪, 屈娟 +1 more

Abstract:In order to efficiently eliminate the security shortcomings of the dynamic ID based remote user authentication scheme using smart cards (short for XJWM scheme) proposed by Xu et al.,a new multi server and multi factor anonymous remote authenticated key agreement protocol was presented, based on Diffie Hellman key agreement algorithm and biometrical authentication technology. The new protocol can not only overcome the security flaws of XJWM scheme, but also add smart card’s password and bio information authentication for the cardholder to avoid the smart card stolen attack. The security of the new protocol was proved by the improved BAN logic and the result showed that the new scheme can ensure the correctness of key agreement, key confidentiality, key freshness and mutual authentication. The security and performance analysis demonstrated that the proposed protocol provides better security without increasing too much computation overhead.

Secure multi‐factor remote user authentication scheme for Internet of Things environments

Parwinder Kaur Dhillon, Sheetal Kalra

Summary Because of the exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT), several services are being developed. These services can be accessed through smart gadgets by the user at any place, every time and anywhere. This makes security and privacy central to IoT environments. In this paper, we propose a lightweight, robust, and multi‐factor remote user authentication and key agreement scheme for IoT environments. Using this protocol, any authorized user can access and gather real‐time sensor data from the IoT nodes. Before gaining access to any IoT node, the user must first get authenticated by the gateway node as well as the IoT node. The proposed protocol is based on XOR and hash operations, and includes: (i) a3‐factorauthentication (ie, password, biometrics, and smart device); (ii)mutual authentication; (iii)shared session key; and (iv)key freshness. It satisfies desirable security attributes and maintains acceptable efficiency in terms of the computational overheads for resource constrained IoT environment. Further, the informal and formal security analysis using AVISPA proves security strength of the protocol and its robustness against all possible security threats. Simulation results also prove that the scheme is secure against attacks.

A robust remote user authentication scheme resistant to known session specific temporary information attack

Mrudula Sarvabhatla, M. Chandra Mouli Reddy, Chandra Sekhar Vorugunti

Rapid growth of mobile and networking technologies, resulted in new paradigms of networking like Internet of Things (IoT) etc, which allows user to connect to insecure public communication channel through various devices and can access the services and data provided by remote server. Thus, remote user authentication and key agreement for wireless, wired, IoT communications becoming more challenging task. In this context many researchers have proposed authentication schemes. In 2013, An et al. proposed a dynamic ID-based remote user authentication scheme which is secure, even if the secret values stored in the smart card is revealed. In 2014, Troung et al claimed that An et al scheme is vulnerable to server forgery attack and proposed an improved scheme. In this manuscript, we validate that Troung et al's scheme is vulnerable to known session specific temporary information attack, replay and impersonation attack. Furthermore, we also propose the improved scheme to overcome these limitations without increase in the cost front.
