The Forming of Stable Comb-Like Pulses in an Ensemble of Three-Level Atoms Under Conditions of ¿-Scheme Double Resonance. Numerical Simulation

Abstract

The process of double resonance in atomic vapour of metals is studied numerically. The Λ-scheme of exciting and input pulses with duration 10-13-10-11sec are considered. It is shown that under these conditions in the major frequency channel (pump) the new type of pulse with comb-like real envelope can arise. In the case of strict resonance in this channel comb-like pulse has the same structure as ordinary 0pi-pulse in the self-induced transparency theory. The distinctive feature of this pulse is the very slight attenuation during its propagation in the medium despite of fact that its duration is compatible with time of irreversible relaxation of quantum transitions.

Peculiarities of coherent-light-shaped pulse amplification under transient common-upper-level double-resonance scheme conditions

Oleg M. Parshkov, Alexey E. Dmitriev, Andrey L. Vershinin

One consider the amplification of pulses of coherent light in the resonant three-level active media that is excited by short power pulse of coherent light according to the common-upper- level double resonance scheme. The radiation with major frequency (pump) is supposed to be stronger than one with minor frequency (signal). The self-induced transparency is supposed to be established in the pump channel. The exponential growth of stationary shape short signal pulses is studied mainly. One shows that when any described here conditions for initial signal pulse shape are meeting the stationary gained signal pulse of complicated form can be formed. The gains of these pulses are less than ones for signal pulses of quasi-hyperbolic-secant form. Therefore in the case of incomplete condition meeting the competition between the exponentially growing signal pulses with different gains and shapes leads finally to the overwhelming of signal pulse with quasi-hyperbolic-secant-shape form. The effect of inhomogeneous broadening of spectral transition lines on the parameters of signal pulses was studied too. Evaluations that were carried out for any atomic gases show that described in this paper phenomena can be produced at realistic levels of power and duration of pump and signal pulses.

Numerical simulation of the quasi-resonance transient double resonance regime in a scheme with the common upper level for a small inhomogeneous broadening of quantum transition lines

Oleg M. Parshkov

The transient double resonance in the Λ-scheme is numerically investigated for short input laser pulses whose spectral widths exceed noticeably the Doppler width of quantum transitions. The case of the exact resonance is considered, when the frequencies of input pulses coincide with the central frequencies of quantum transitions, and the quasi-resonance case, when this coincidence is slightly violated. It is shown that a pulse with a lower frequency is shortened and considerably amplified during its propagation in a medium. A pulse with a higher frequency transforms to a pulse with a ridge envelope, which virtually does not decay during its propagation despite the presence of irreversible relaxation. Estimates were performed for quantum transitions in the 208 Pb atom.

Precursor pulse and frequency modulation of quasi-resonance self-induced transparency pulses in the presence of irreversible relaxation

Andrey L. Vershinin, A E Dmitriev, Oleg M. Parshkov

The quasi-resonance interaction of a laser pulse with an inhomogeneously broadened quantum transition is numerically simulated under conditions corresponding to the experiment on the study of self-induced transparency in rubidium vapours. It is shown that the experimental shift of the pulse spectrum is caused by the initial stage of the formation of a precursor pulse and the influence of irreversible relaxation. It is found that the precursor pulse is more stable to the destructive action of relaxation than the 2π pulse and appears even in the case when the input pulse area is insufficient for the formation of the 2π pulse.

Adiabatons in the nonstationary double resonance on degenerate quantum transitions

А. В. Волков, Дружинина Надежда Александровна, Oleg M. Parshkov

The nonstationary double resonance is numerically simulated in the Λ-scheme of degenerate energy levels with the quantum number J of the total angular momentum equal to 0, 2, and 1. The analysis is performed in the slowly varying envelope approximation taking into account the inhomogeneous broadening of quantum transition lines. In the case of a high-power input low-frequency pulse of long duration with a flat top switched on before the application of a comparatively weak and short input high-frequency pulse and switched off after the end of the latter, a specific pulsed structure, the so-called double adiabaton, can appear. It differs from an adiabaton known from the theory of electromagnetically induced transparency by the decomposition of the high-frequency pulse into two pulses with oppositely directed elliptic polarisations.

Investigation of double-resonance self-induced transparency in a three-level system by numerical techniques

Dmitrii I. Gruev

The propagation of two ultrashort radiation pulses interacting via an intermediate level is analyzed by numerical integration of a system of equations describing coherent interaction between radiation and a three-level medium. It is shown that the propagation of the pulses depends strongly on their areas on entry to the medium and on the relationship between the dipole moments of transitions between neighboring levels. Substantial temporal narrowing was established for fairly high-power pulses (4π and 6π pulses) and this may be utilized to control their durations. Investigations are also made of the influence of relaxation processes, delay of pulses relative to one another on entry to the medium, and nonresonant dispersion during pulse propagation under the specified conditions.
