Possibility for observation of the narrow resonances of the saturated absorption and dispersion

Abstract

Summary form only given. Results are presented of theoretical studies into the resonances of the saturated absorption and saturated dispersion in an external absorption cell. The theory has been worked out by means of combining methods of mathematical theory of diffraction and quantum mechanical method for computing the polarization of active media. This made it possible for the first time to find a self-consisting spatial solution of the density matrix equation for the two-level system and the Helmholtz equation for electromagnetic field and to solve the problem of propagation of two counterpropagating monochromatic waves though an absorbing nonlinear medium taking into consideration the transverse transit-time effect.

Theory of Saturable Reflection

James D. Macomber, Neil R. Kestner

The theory of the effect of optical saturation upon the reflectance of a plane slab (irradiated by a linearly polarized monochromatic electromagnetic wave of constant amplitude at normal incidence) is developed. The absorbing centers within the slab are described by means of the density matrix, and the electromagnetic field is described by Maxwell's equations. For simplicity's sake, it is assumed that only two quantum states (characterized by a transition dipole moment μ and relaxation times T1 and T2) at exact resonance with the electromagnetic wave are necessary to describe the absorption process. The coupling between waves travelling in opposite directions is provided by Fresnel reflection at the boundaries of the slab. Only the steady-state solutions are found.

The influence of higher spatial harmonics of atomic polarization on the saturated absorption resonance upon excitation of open dipole transitions by a field of counterpropagating waves

Denis V. Brazhnikov, A. S. Novokreshchenov

The effect of a double structure of saturated absorption resonance in the field of counterpropagating light waves interacting with an atomic gas is studied. The experimental observation of this effect was first reported in 2011 in a work by our colleagues at the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Laboratory of Frequency Standards). The essence of the effect lies in the fact that, on exciting an open dipole transition, another, narrower, resonance of an opposite sign can be observed at the center of the ordinary saturated absorption resonance. A theoretical analysis of this effect has also been performed in this work in terms of a simple spectroscopic model of an atom with two nondegenerate energy levels without taking into account higher spatial harmonics of atomic polarization and polarizations of light waves (scalar model). The present work is devoted to the development of a theory of the formation of a central narrow resonance for the example of a real F g = 1 → F e = 1 atomic transition and to the study of its main characteristics (amplitude, width, contrast, and amplitude-to-width ratio). In addition, the theoretical results obtained without taking into account the influence of higher spatial harmonics and with inclusion of the influence of first higher harmonics are compared. This comparison shows that their influence on the parameters of the new nonlinear resonance is strong even in moderately intense light fields (R ~ γ, where R is the Rabi frequency). The results of this study can be of interest for quantum metrology, as well as for many experiments in which the laser-radiation frequency is stabilized by the saturated absorption resonance on open dipole transitions in atoms and molecules.

Translucency waves in optically dense media

V. E. Khartsiev

The phenomena which take place during the time of propagation of a monochromatic pulse of a resonance radiation through optically dense on the transition frequency medium containing resonance absorbing centers are considered. Due to the action of the pulse of the resonance radiation the saturation of absorption in the layer of the medium takes place. As a result the absorption decreases in the layer and the radiation penetrates into the next layer. Thus translucent region continuously moves deeper into the medium and the process is wavelike. When the density of the initial photon flux is constant and the distribution of absorbing centers is homogeneous the absorption coefficient and the photon density in the depth of the media depends only on the variable $t\phantom{\rule{0.15em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}\phantom{\rule{0.15em}{0ex}}x/v$. The velocity of translucency wave v may be by several orders of magnitude less than the velocity of light. The mechanism of the saturation can be various. The small value of the loss of photons in the transluced region of the medium is the necessary condition for the rise of translucent waves. The condition of realization of translucent wave is fulfilled for a large number of condensed states having intense absorption lines. These conditions are the most favourable in the case of presence of methastable levels between the levels 1 and 2 (type-ruby system). The effect of the translucent waves is general for various ranges of spectrum of electromagnetic radiation and may be realized in astrophysical scale.

Coherent Resonance of Saturated Absorption in Spectroscopy of Counterpropagating Waves

А. А. Черненко, Э. Г. Сапрыкин, Anatolii M. Shalagin

Results of theoretical researches of the saturated absorption resonance shape in a method of the probing field on V-type of transitions are represented. It is shown that in case of opposite circulary polarized optical fields the resonance is shown in the form of cross, and its form strongly depends on relaxation constants of levels and it can be represented as in the form of a dip, and absorption peak. Thus the peak form has exclusively coherent character. Atomic transitions are offered, on which observation of the given effect is possible.

Nonlinear saturated absorption in resonant media: Level-degeneracy-induced polarization effects

Govind Prasad Agrawal

The effect of level degeneracy on saturated absorption in a resonant medium is considered using a simple but realistic three-level system to model $J=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J=0$ atomic transition. Assuming homogeneous broadening and exact resonance, an analytic nonperturbative expression for the medium susceptibility is obtained and used to study propagation of an arbitrarily polarized optical field. Optical saturation affects considerably Zeeman-coherence-induced circular dichroism. The analysis may find application in high-resolution spectroscopy and other branches of nonlinear optics.
