Quantum metrology exploits quantum phenomena to improve the measurement sensitivity. Theoretical analysis shows that quantum measurement can break through the standard quantum limits and reach super sensitivity level. Quantum radar systems based on quantum measurement can fufill not only conventional target detection and recognition tasks but also capable of detecting and identifying the RF stealth platform and weapons systems. The theoretical basis, classification, physical realization of quantum radar is discussed comprehensively in this paper. And the technology state and open questions of quantum radars is reviewed at the end.

Quantum radar: An engineering perspective

Murat Can Karakoç, Özgün Ersoy, AHMAD SALMANOGHLI KHIAVI +1 more

Quantum radar has emerged as a promising sensing paradigm that exploits quantum resources, including entanglement and quantum correlations, to enhance target detection in noisy and lossy environments. Although entanglement generated by superconducting devices such as Josephson parametric amplifiers, Josephson parametric converters, and Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifiers is rapidly degraded under realistic propagation conditions, the remaining quantum correlations can still provide a measurable detection advantage through the principles of quantum illumination. This review presents a comprehensive engineering perspective on quantum radar, covering the theoretical foundations of quantum illumination, microwave entanglement generation, electro-optomechanical quantum transducers, atmospheric channel effects, cryogenic receiver architectures, and digital signal-processing techniques. Recent microwave experimental demonstrations are also reviewed, highlighting the transition from theoretical concepts to laboratory-scale implementations. Collectively, these developments demonstrate that microwave quantum radar is evolving toward practical sensing architectures while emphasizing the engineering challenges that must be addressed before real-world deployment.

Quantum illumination and quantum radar: a brief overview

Athena Karsa, Alasdair I. Fletcher, Gaetana Spedalieri +1 more

Quantum illumination (QI) and quantum radar have emerged as potentially groundbreaking technologies, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to revolutionise the field of remote sensing and target detection. The protocol, particularly in the context of quantum radar, has been subject to a great deal of aspirational conjecture as well as criticism with respect to its realistic potential. In this review, we present a broad overview of the field of quantum target detection focusing on QI and its potential as an underlying scheme for a quantum radar operating at microwave frequencies. We provide context for the field by considering its historical development and fundamental principles. Our aim is to provide a balanced discussion on the state of theoretical and experimental progress towards realising a working QI-based quantum radar, and draw conclusions about its current outlook and future directions.

The Radar is a kind of active remote-sensing device which has the abilities to detect and identify targets in all weathers. With the development of the radar system, the pursuit of higher SAR image quality makes the radar system more and more complicated so that the current radar systems need a revolution. Theoretical analyses show that a device processing quantum information has the potential to promote its sensitivity at utmost and the system performance would be increased as a result. This paper demonstrates the development history of quantum radar and predicts the feasibility of the quantum radar.
