Abstract

The Radar is a kind of active remote-sensing device which has the abilities to detect and identify targets in all weathers. With the development of the radar system, the pursuit of higher SAR image quality makes the radar system more and more complicated so that the current radar systems need a revolution. Theoretical analyses show that a device processing quantum information has the potential to promote its sensitivity at utmost and the system performance would be increased as a result. This paper demonstrates the development history of quantum radar and predicts the feasibility of the quantum radar.

According to the latest research development in quantum information technology in the area of remote sensing, the principles, advantages and research status of quantum imaging and quantum radar are introduced. The issues about basic theories and key technologies in the process of engineering modernization are reviewed. Moreover, the assumption that the new remote sensing system of quantum information technology is expected to break through the limitations of themodern radar and will become the trend of the development of the next generation radar is pointed out.

Quantum illumination and quantum radar: a brief overview

Athena Karsa, Alasdair I. Fletcher, Gaetana Spedalieri +1 more

Quantum illumination (QI) and quantum radar have emerged as potentially groundbreaking technologies, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to revolutionise the field of remote sensing and target detection. The protocol, particularly in the context of quantum radar, has been subject to a great deal of aspirational conjecture as well as criticism with respect to its realistic potential. In this review, we present a broad overview of the field of quantum target detection focusing on QI and its potential as an underlying scheme for a quantum radar operating at microwave frequencies. We provide context for the field by considering its historical development and fundamental principles. Our aim is to provide a balanced discussion on the state of theoretical and experimental progress towards realising a working QI-based quantum radar, and draw conclusions about its current outlook and future directions.

Quantum radar technology and its developments

Yan Chen, Hongyu Yang, Hui Ying Zhao

Quantum metrology exploits quantum phenomena to improve the measurement sensitivity. Theoretical analysis shows that quantum measurement can break through the standard quantum limits and reach super sensitivity level. Quantum radar systems based on quantum measurement can fufill not only conventional target detection and recognition tasks but also capable of detecting and identifying the RF stealth platform and weapons systems. The theoretical basis, classification, physical realization of quantum radar is discussed comprehensively in this paper. And the technology state and open questions of quantum radars is reviewed at the end.

An Overview of Radar System Based on Quantum Technology

Zhou Cheng-hong, Qian Wei-ping

Quantum radar is a promising remote sensor that exploits quantum phenomena to perceive target information.By introducing quantum strategy into transmitter or/and receiver, its accuracy breaks the standard quantum limit, but still follows the Heisenberg uncertainty relation. The acquisition, transmission and processing of information are promoted by quantum theory greatly. In this paper, the concept and princi-ple of quantum radar, including quantum interferometry, quantum ladar, quantum illumination, are intro-duced in detail,as well as the development, classification and performance. Finally, the technological essen-tials and development direction are discussed from an engineering perspective.

Quantum synthetic aperture radar

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) uses sensor motion to generate finer spatial resolution of a given target area. In this paper we explore the theoretical potential of quantum synthetic aperture quantum radar (QSAR). We provide theoretical analysis and simulation results which suggest that QSAR can provide improved detection performance over classical SAR in the high-noise low-brightness regime.

Detecting a target with quantum entanglement

Giacomo Sorelli, Nicolas Treps, Frédéric Grosshans +1 more

In the last decade a lot of research activity focused on the use of quantum entanglement as a resource for remote target detection, i.e. on the design of a quantum radar. The literature on this subject uses tools of quantum optics and quantum information theory, and therefore often results obscure to radar scientists. This review has been written with purpose of removing this obscurity. As such, it contains a review of the main advances in the quantum radar literature together accompanied by a thorough introduction of the quantum optics background necessary for its understanding.
