Fermion Spectrum Of Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Model In The Phase With Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract

We investigate the fermion spectrum within the Bose–Fermi–Hubbard model used for the description of boson-fermion mixtures of ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. We used the method based on the Hubbard operator approach for an on-site basis. The equation for fermion Green’s function in the Bose–Fermi–Hubbard model is built; Green’s functions of higher orders are decoupled in the Hubbard-I approximation (the case of the strong on-site interaction). The corresponding spectral densities are calculated. In the case of hard-core bosons, the condition of appearance of additional bands in the fermion spectrum is investigated. It is shown that these bands exist only in the state with a Bose–Einstein condensate and appear because of the mixing of states with different numbers of bosons. These additional bands can be interpreted as a manifestation of composite excitations (when the appearance of a fermion on the site is accompanied by the simultaneous creation (or annihilation) of a boson).

Quantum phase transition and elementary excitations of a Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Shi-Jian Gu, Junpeng Cao, Shu Chen +1 more

The mixture of the scalar bosonic and the spinless or polarized fermionic cold atoms in the one-dimensional optical lattice is studied. The system is modeled by the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, which shows different behavior from that of the Bose-Hubbard or the Fermi-Hubbard models. Because the $\text{SU}(1\ensuremath{\mid}1)$-supersymmetric Bethe ansatz solution gives an excellent approximation to this kind of mixed cold atomic systems, the ground-state properties of the system such as the densities of state in the momentum space are obtained based on the Bethe ansatz. If the number of bosons is equal to that of fermions and the filling factor is 1, it is found that there exists a critical on-site interaction ${U}_{c}$. If $U<{U}_{c}$, the ground state of the system is in the superfluid phase, while if $U>{U}_{c}$, the ground state is in the insulating phase. The superfluid-insulator transition occurs at ${U}_{c}$. From the analysis of the superfluid density, the value of the critical point is determined as ${U}_{c}=2.79256$, which is larger than the ${U}_{c}=0$ for the Fermi-Hubbard model and smaller than the ${U}_{c}=3.28$ for the Bose-Hubbard model. The elementary excitations and effective Hamiltonian in the strong-coupling limit are also discussed.

Phonon-like excitations in the two-state Bose-Hubbard model

Stasyuk, O. V. Velychko, Vorobyov

The spectrum of phonon-like collective excitations in the system of Bose-atoms in optical lattice (more generally, in the system of quantum particles described by the Bose-Hubbard model) is investigated.Such excitations appear due to displacements of particles with respect to their local equilibrium positions. The two-level model taking into account the transitions of bosons between the ground state and the first excited state in potential wells, as well as interaction between them, is used.Calculations are performed within the random phase approximation in the hard-core boson limit. It is shown that excitation spectrum in normal phase consists of the one exciton-like band, while in the phase with BE condensate an additional band appears. The positions, spectral weights and widths of bands strongly depend on chemical potential of bosons and temperature. The conditions of stability of a system with respect to the lowering of symmetry and displacement modulation are discussed.

Phase transitions in Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model in the heavy fermion limit: Hard-core boson approach

Stasyuk, Володимир Олександрович Краснов

Phase transitions are investigated in the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model in the mean field and hard-core boson approximations for the case of infinitely small fermion transfer and repulsive on-site boson-fermion interaction. The behavior of the Bose-Einstein condensate order parameter and grand canonical potential is analyzed as functions of the chemical potential of bosons at zero temperature. The possibility of change of order of the phase transition to the superfluid phase in the regime of fixed values of the chemical potentials of Bose-and Fermi-particles is established. The relevant phase diagrams are built.

Mott Criticality and Pseudogap in Bose-Fermi Mixtures

Ehud Altman, Eugene Demler, Achim Rosch

We study the Mott transition of a mixed Bose-Fermi system of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, where the number of (spinless) fermions and bosons adds up to one atom per lattice, n(F)+n(B)=1. For weak interactions, a Fermi surface coexists with a Bose-Einstein condensate while for strong interaction the system is incompressible but still characterized by a Fermi surface of composite fermions. At the critical point, the spectral function of the fermions A(k,ω) exhibits a pseudogapped behavior, rising as |ω| at the Fermi momentum, while in the Mott phase it is fully gapped. Taking into account the interaction between the critical modes leads at very low temperatures either to p-wave pairing or the transition is driven weakly first order. The same mechanism should also be important in antiferromagnetic metals with a small Fermi surface.

Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model in the truncated Hilbert space limit

Володимир Олександрович Краснов, Stasyuk

It is shown that in the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model which is used for a description of the ultracold atomic boson-fermion mixture in the optical lattice, the $n_\text{B}\leqslant 2$ restriction enables one to analyze a more general case of separated lobes Mott insulator in comparison with the case of $n_\text{B} \leqslant 1$ (hard-core bosons). It also showed that the restriction to no more than 2 bosons on site is enough to comprehend the structure of $(μ, |t_0|)$ diagrams at arbitrary $n^\text{b}$ values with an account of a possibility of the 1st order phase transition.

The Bose-Fermi Hubbard model in the light and heavy fermion limits

Alexander Mering, Dominik Muth, Michael Fleischhauer

We discuss mixtures of bosons and spin-polarized fermions in optical lattices in the limits of heavy and light fermions. The first case is mapped to a Bose-Hubbard system with binary disorder or a super-lattice potential. Boundaries between Mott-insulating and compressible phases are determined analytically within an extended strong-coupling expansion. DMRG calculations reveal furthermore a novel phase with Bose-glass character. In the opposite limit of ultra-light fermions an effective boson Hamiltonian is derived with an oscillatory long-range interactions leading to additional phases such as compressible density-waves. We show that CDW and Luttinger-liquid phase are separated by a Bose-glass phase.
