We show that the geometric phase of the ground state in the XY model obeys scaling behavior in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition. In particular we find that the geometric phase is nonanalytical and its derivative with respect to the field strength diverges at the critical magnetic field. Furthermore, the universality in the critical properties of the geometric phase in a family of models is verified. In addition, since the quantum phase transition occurs at a level crossing or avoided level crossing and these level structures can be captured by the Berry curvature, the established relation between the geometric phase and quantum phase transitions is not a specific property of the XY model, but a very general result of many-body systems.
Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Taski (AKLT) constructed an exemplary spin-3/2 valence-bond solid (VBS) state on the hexagonal lattice, which is the ground state of an isotropic quantum antiferromagnet and possesses no spontaneous magnetization but finite correlation length. This is distinct from the N\'eel ordered state of the spin-3/2 Heisenberg model on the same lattice. Niggemann, Kl\"umper, and Zittartz then generalized the AKLT Hamiltonian to one family invariant under spin rotation about the
z axis. The ground states of this family can be parameterized by a single parameter that deforms the AKLT state, and this system exhibits a quantum phase transition between the VBS and N\'eel phases, as the parameter increases from the AKLT point to large anisotropy. We investigate the opposite regime when the parameter decreases from the AKLT point and find that there appears to be a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transition from the VBS phase to an XY phase. Such a transition also occurs in the deformation of other types of AKLT states with triplet-bond constructions on the same lattice. However, we do not find such an XY-like phase in the deformed AKLT models on other trivalent lattices, such as square-octagon, cross, and star lattices. On the star lattice, the deformed family of AKLT states remain in the same phase as the isotropic AKLT state throughout the whole region of the parameter. However, for two triplet-bond generalizations, the triplet VBS phase is sandwiched between two ferromagnetic phases (for large and small deformation parameters, respectively), which are characterized by spontaneous magnetizations along different axes. Along the way, we also discuss how various deformed AKLT states can be used for the purpose of universal quantum computation.
Abstract When a system close to a continuous phase transition is subjected to perturbations, it takes an exceptionally long time to return to equilibrium. This critical slowing down is observed universally in the dynamics of bosonic excitations, such as order-parameter collective modes, but it is not generally expected to occur for fermionic excitations. Here using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we find evidence for fermionic critical slowing down in YbRh2Si2 close to a quantum phase transition between an antiferromagnetic phase and a heavy Fermi liquid. In the latter phase, the relevant quasiparticles are a quantum superposition of itinerant and localized electronic states with a strongly enhanced effective mass. As the temperature is lowered on the heavy-Fermi-liquid side of the transition, the heavy-fermion spectral weight builds up until the Kondo temperature TK ≈ 25 K, then decays towards the quantum phase transition and is, thereafter, followed by a logarithmic rise of the quasiparticle excitation rate below 10 K. A two-band heavy-Fermi-liquid theory shows that this is indicative of the fermionic critical slowing down associated with heavy-fermion breakdown near the quantum phase transition. The critical exponent of this breakdown could be used to classify this system among a wider family of fermionic quantum phase transitions that is yet to be fully explored.
