Abstract

Abstract We present another topological superfluid with s -wave pairing for ultracold fermionic atoms in addition to the chiral topological superfluid proposed by Sato et al (2009 Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 020401 ), of which edge dislocations host Majorana zero modes that may be utilized as decoherence-free qubits, and quantized vortices trap zero energy modes. The quantum phase fluctuations for topological superfluids and Berezinsky–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition are also discussed.

Creating single Majorana type topological zero mode in superfluids of cold fermionic atoms

Xiao-Shan Ye, Yongjun Liu, Xiu Yun Zhang +1 more

Abstract We explore the topological phase, which involves Majorana type topological zero mode fermions (MTZFs) at the edge, using d–wave superfluid with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interactions. The self-Hermitian of this MTZF( $${{\boldsymbol{\gamma }}}^{{\boldsymbol{\dagger }}}{\boldsymbol{(}}{\bf{k}}{\boldsymbol{)}}{\boldsymbol{=}}{\boldsymbol{\gamma }}{\boldsymbol{(}}{\bf{k}}{\boldsymbol{)}}$$ γ † ( k ) = γ ( k ) ) is similar to that of the Majorana fermions (MFs) ( $${{\boldsymbol{\gamma }}}^{{\boldsymbol{\dagger }}}={\boldsymbol{\gamma }}$$ γ † = γ ). We show that, to realize a single MTZF at each edge in superfluid with d–wave pairing in a Majorana type Kramers Doublet (MTKD) state, it is important to lift both the spin and the Dirac Cones degeneracies. These non-Abelian anyons obey the non-Abelian statistics which may be useful to realize topological quantum computation. We suggest that the topological feature could be tested experimentally in superfluids of cold fermionic atoms with laser field induced spin orbit interactions. These studies give a new possible way to investigate the MTZFs in a two-dimensional (2D) system as compared to MFs in the one-dimensional (1D) nano-wire and 2D system, and enrich the theoretical research on finding non-Abelian anyons in topological system.

Non-Abelian Majorana fermions in topological s-wave Fermi superfluids

L A Toikka

Abstract By solving the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations analytically, we derive the fermionic zero-modes satisfying the Majorana property that exist in vortices of a two-dimensional s-wave Fermi superfluid with spin–orbit coupling and Zeeman spin-splitting. The Majorana zero-mode becomes normalisable and exponentially localised to the vicinity of the vortex core when the superfluid is topologically non-trivial. We calculate the energy splitting due to Majorana hybridisation and identify that the s-wave Majorana vortices obey non-Abelian statistics.

Topologically non-trivial superfluid phases and Majorana fermions from Kohn-Luttinger effect

M. S. Mar’enko, Jay Deep Sau, Sumanta Tewari

Spin-triplet p-wave superfluids of single-species (or spin-polarized) fermionic atoms is a topological superfluid. In 2D such a superfluid supports zero-energy topological Majorana fermion excitations in order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. In 3D these superfluids support topologically protected Dirac points in the bulk spectrum and flat surface Majorana arcs. Despite the promise, creating a spin-triplet p-wave single-species fermionic superfluid either from direct p-wave Feshbach resonance or indirectly from the recently proposed artificial spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings can be technologically challenging. Here we show that such topological superfluids can be far more simply created by using the Kohn-Luttinger effect applied to two species of spin-polarized fermions with a density imbalance. We discuss how the topological Majorana excitations of the resulting superfluids can be identified using recently-developed experimental techniques.

Realizing one-dimensional topological superfluids with ultracold atomic gases

Sylvain Nascimbène

We propose an experimental implementation of a topological superfluid with ultracold fermionic atoms. An optical superlattice is used to juxtapose a 1D gas of fermionic atoms and a 2D conventional superfluid of condensed Feshbach molecules. The latter acts as a Cooper pair reservoir and effectively induces a superfluid gap in the 1D system. Combined with a spin-dependent optical lattice along the 1D tube and laser-induced atom tunneling, we obtain a topological superfluid phase. In the regime of weak couplings to the molecular fl eld and for a uniform gas the atomic system is equivalent to Kitaev's model of a p-wave superfluid. Using a numerical calculation we show that the topological superfluidity is robust beyond the perturbative limit and in the presence of a harmonic trap. Finally we describe how to investigate some physical properties of the Majorana fermions located at the topological superfluid boundaries. In particular we discuss how to prepare and detect a given Majorana edge state.

Quantum Computation using Vortices and Majorana Zero Modes of a px+ipy Superfluid of Fermionic Cold Atoms

Sumanta Tewari, S. Das Sarma, Chetan Nayak +2 more

We propose to use the recently predicted two-dimensional "weak-pairing" px + ipy superfluid state of fermionic cold atoms as a platform for topological quantum computation. In the core of a vortex, this state supports a zero-energy Majorana mode, which moves to finite energy in the corresponding topologically trivial "strong-pairing" state. By braiding vortices in the "weak-pairing" state, unitary quantum gates can be applied to the Hilbert space of Majorana zero modes. For readout of the topological qubits, we propose realistic schemes suitable for atomic superfluids.

Quantum Computing with p-Wave Superfluid Vortices

Tetsuo Ohmi, Mikio Nakahara

It is shown that Majorana fermions trapped in three vortices in a p-wave superfluid form a qubit in a topological quantum computing (TQC). Several similar ideas have already been proposed: Ivanov [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 268 (2001)] and Zhang {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99}, 220502 (2007)] have proposed schemes in which a qubit is implemented with two and four Majorana fermions, respectively, where a qubit operation is performed by exchanging the positions of Majorana fermions. The set of gates thus obtained is a discrete subset of the relevant unitary group. We propose, in this paper, a new scheme, where three Majorana fermions form a qubit. We show that continuous 1-qubit gate operations are possible by exchanging the positions of Majorana fermions complemented with dynamical phase change. 2-qubit gates are realized through the use of the coupling between Majorana fermions of different qubits.
