Abstract

Abstract By solving the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations analytically, we derive the fermionic zero-modes satisfying the Majorana property that exist in vortices of a two-dimensional s-wave Fermi superfluid with spin–orbit coupling and Zeeman spin-splitting. The Majorana zero-mode becomes normalisable and exponentially localised to the vicinity of the vortex core when the superfluid is topologically non-trivial. We calculate the energy splitting due to Majorana hybridisation and identify that the s-wave Majorana vortices obey non-Abelian statistics.

Creating single Majorana type topological zero mode in superfluids of cold fermionic atoms

Xiao-Shan Ye, Yongjun Liu, Xiu Yun Zhang +1 more

Abstract We explore the topological phase, which involves Majorana type topological zero mode fermions (MTZFs) at the edge, using d–wave superfluid with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interactions. The self-Hermitian of this MTZF( $${{\boldsymbol{\gamma }}}^{{\boldsymbol{\dagger }}}{\boldsymbol{(}}{\bf{k}}{\boldsymbol{)}}{\boldsymbol{=}}{\boldsymbol{\gamma }}{\boldsymbol{(}}{\bf{k}}{\boldsymbol{)}}$$ γ † ( k ) = γ ( k ) ) is similar to that of the Majorana fermions (MFs) ( $${{\boldsymbol{\gamma }}}^{{\boldsymbol{\dagger }}}={\boldsymbol{\gamma }}$$ γ † = γ ). We show that, to realize a single MTZF at each edge in superfluid with d–wave pairing in a Majorana type Kramers Doublet (MTKD) state, it is important to lift both the spin and the Dirac Cones degeneracies. These non-Abelian anyons obey the non-Abelian statistics which may be useful to realize topological quantum computation. We suggest that the topological feature could be tested experimentally in superfluids of cold fermionic atoms with laser field induced spin orbit interactions. These studies give a new possible way to investigate the MTZFs in a two-dimensional (2D) system as compared to MFs in the one-dimensional (1D) nano-wire and 2D system, and enrich the theoretical research on finding non-Abelian anyons in topological system.

Ab initio simulation of non-Abelian braiding statistics in topological superconductors

Takumi Sanno, Shunsuke Miyazaki, Takeshi Mizushima +1 more

We numerically investigate non-Abelian braiding dynamics of vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors, such as $s$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Majorana zero modes (MZMs) hosted by the vortices constitute a topological qubit, which offers a fundamental building block of topological quantum computation. As the MZMs are protected by ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ invariant, however, the Majorana qubit and quantum gate operations may be sensitive to intrinsic decoherence caused by MZM hybridization. Numerically simulating the time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation without assuming a priori existence of MZMs, we examine quantum noises on the unitary operators of non-Abelian braiding dynamics due to interactions with neighboring MZMs and other quasiparticle states. We demonstrate that after the interchange of two vortices, the lowest vortex-bound states accumulate the geometric phase $\ensuremath{\pi}/2$, and errors stemming from dynamical phases are negligibly small, irrespective of interactions of MZMs. Furthermore, we numerically simulate the braiding dynamics of four vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors, and discuss an optimal braiding condition for realizing the high performance of non-Abelian statistics and quantum gate operations of Majorana-based qubits.

Andreev bound states at boundaries of polarized 2D Fermi superfluids with s-wave pairing and spin-orbit coupling

Kadin Thompson, Joachim Brand, Ulrich Zülicke

A topological superfluid phase characterized by an emergent chiral-p-wave pair potential is expected to form in a two-dimensional Fermi superfluid subject to s-wave pairing, spin-orbit coupling and a large-enough Zeeman splitting. Andreev bound states appear at phase boundaries, including Majorana zero modes whose existence is assured by the bulk-boundary correspondence principle. Here we study the physical properties of these subgap-energy bound states at step-like interfaces using the spin-resolved Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field formalism and assuming small spin-orbit coupling. Extending a recently developed spin-projection technique based on Feshbach partitioning [SciPost Phys. 5, 016 (2018)] combined with the Andreev approximation allows us to obtain remarkably simple analytical expressions for the bound-state energies as well as the majority and minority spin components of their wave functions. Besides the vacuum boundary, where a majority-spin Majorana excitation is encountered, we also consider the boundary between the topological and a nontopological superfluid phase that can appear in a coexistence scenario due to the first-order topological phase transition predicted for this system. At this superfluid-superfluid interface, we find a localized chiral Majorana mode hosted by the minority-spin sector. Our theory further predicts majority-spin subgap-energy bound states similar to those found at a Josephson junction between same-chirality p-wave superfluids. Their presence affects the Majorana mode due to a coupling of minority and majority spin sectors only in the small energy range where their spectra overlap. Our results may inform experimental efforts aimed at realizing and characterizing unconventional Majorana quasiparticles.

Topologically non-trivial superfluid phases and Majorana fermions from Kohn-Luttinger effect

M. S. Mar’enko, Jay Deep Sau, Sumanta Tewari

Spin-triplet p-wave superfluids of single-species (or spin-polarized) fermionic atoms is a topological superfluid. In 2D such a superfluid supports zero-energy topological Majorana fermion excitations in order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. In 3D these superfluids support topologically protected Dirac points in the bulk spectrum and flat surface Majorana arcs. Despite the promise, creating a spin-triplet p-wave single-species fermionic superfluid either from direct p-wave Feshbach resonance or indirectly from the recently proposed artificial spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings can be technologically challenging. Here we show that such topological superfluids can be far more simply created by using the Kohn-Luttinger effect applied to two species of spin-polarized fermions with a density imbalance. We discuss how the topological Majorana excitations of the resulting superfluids can be identified using recently-developed experimental techniques.

Multiple Majorana zero modes in atomic Fermi double wires with spin-orbit coupling

Liang‐Liang Wang, Ming Gong, W.-M. Liu

Majorana zero modes, quasiparticles with non-Abelian statistics, have gained increasing interest for their fundamental role as building blocks in topological quantum computation. Previous studies have mainly focused on two well-separated Majorana zero modes, which could form two degenerate states serving as one nonlocal qubit for fault-tolerant quantum memory. However, creating and manipulating multiple Majorana zero modes, which could encode more qubits, remain an ongoing research topic. Here we report that multiple Majorana zero modes can exist in atomic Fermi double wires with spin-orbit coupling and perpendicular Zeeman field. This system belongs to the topological BDI class, thus all the topological superfluids are classified by integer numbers. Especially, diverse topological superfluids can be formed in a trap, where the zero energy modes can be found at the interfaces between different topological superfluids. The structure of these zero energy modes in the trap can be engineered by the trapping potential as well as other system parameters. This system would be a significant step towards utilization of Majorana zero modes in quantum computation.

Accurate projective two-band description of topological superfluidity in spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases

Joachim Brand, Lauri Toikka, Ulrich Zülicke

The interplay of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in ultracold Fermi gases gives rise to a topological superfluid phase in two spatial dimensions that can host exotic Majorana excitations. Theoretical models have so far been based on a four-band Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism for the combined spin- \mathbf{1/2} 1 / 2 and particle-hole degrees of freedom. Here we present a simpler, yet accurate, two-band description based on a well-controlled projection technique that provides a new platform for exploring analogies with chiral p-wave superfluidity and detailed future studies of spatially non-uniform situations.
