Abstract

We study the process of scattering of two-dimensional dark solitons, and their vortex-antivortex pairs as a specific case, by a single quantum vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interaction between atoms. An asymptotic theory describing the dynamics of such solitonlike structures in a smoothly inhomogeneous flow of ultracold Bose gas is developed. An analytical expression for the angle of scattering of two-dimensional dark solitons (including vortex pairs) by a single-phase singularity is obtained in the limit of large impact parameters. All theoretical concepts are confirmed by numerical calculations performed directly within the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is shown that for small impact parameters, the considered solitonlike structures interact inelastically with the core of a single quantum vortex, scattering over large angles and radiating sound waves.

Scattering of a vortex pair by a single quantum vortex in a Bose–Einstein condensate

Lev A. Smirnov, A. I. Smirnov, V. A. Mironov

We analyze the scattering of vortex pairs (the particular case of 2D dark solitons) by a single quantum vortex in a Bose–Einstein condensate with repulsive interaction between atoms. For this purpose, an asymptotic theory describing the dynamics of such 2D soliton-like formations in an arbitrary smoothly nonuniform flow of a ultracold Bose gas is developed. Disregarding the radiation loss associated with acoustic wave emission, we demonstrate that vortex–antivortex pairs can be put in correspondence with quasiparticles, and their behavior can be described by canonical Hamilton equations. For these equations, we determine the integrals of motion that can be used to classify various regimes of scattering of vortex pairs by a single quantum vortex. Theoretical constructions are confirmed by numerical calculations performed directly in terms of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We propose a method for estimating the radiation loss in a collision of a soliton-like formation with a phase singularity. It is shown by direct numerical simulation that under certain conditions, the interaction of vortex pairs with a core of a single quantum vortex is accompanied by quite intense acoustic wave emission; as a result, the conditions for applicability of the asymptotic theory developed here are violated. In particular, it is visually demonstrated by a specific example how radiation losses lead to a transformation of a vortex–antivortex pair into a vortex-free 2D dark soliton (i.e., to the annihilation of phase singularities).

Dynamics of two-dimensional dark quasisolitons in a smoothly inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate

Lev A. Smirnov, V. A. Mironov

We develop an asymptotic theory describing the dynamics of two-dimensional dark quasisolitons in a smoothly inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with repulsive interaction between atoms. It is shown that the trajectories of such quasisolitons coincide with the geometric-optical rays in an equivalent isotropic medium characterized by the effective refractive index dependent on both the density of the undisturbed condensate and the energy of the structures. An expression for this effective refractive index is found and specific features of the refraction of quasisolitons with different initial energies by the condensate inhomogeneities are studied. The obtained results are confirmed by direct numerical simulation using the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation.

Scattering of two-dimensional dark quasi-solitons by smooth inhomogeneities in a Bose-Einstein condensate

V. A. Mironov, Lev A. Smirnov

It is theoretically shown that creation of artificial inhomogeneities allows one to control dynamics of two-dimensional dark quasi-solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate. A method to calculate trajectories of these quasi-solitons is proposed. It allows control parameters to be selected for the potentials responsible for formation of the Bose gas density distributions required for the scattering through the given angle.

Dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional bright and vortex solitons of a dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interaction

Luis E. Young-S., Paulsamy Muruganandam, Sadhan K. Adhikari

By numerical and variational analysis of the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we study the formation and dynamics of bright and vortex-bright solitons in a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate for large repulsive atomic interactions. A phase diagram showing the region of stability of the solitons is obtained. We also study the dynamics of breathing oscillation of the solitons as well as the collision dynamics of two solitons. At large velocities the frontal collision is elastic and the two three-dimensional solitons pass through each other undeformed. Two solitons placed side by side at rest coalesce to form a stable bound soliton molecule due to dipolar attraction. Movie clips illustrating collision and molecule-formation dynamics of two bright and vortex-bright solitons are included.

Hydrodynamics of vortices and solitons in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

Subramaniyan Sabari, Bishwajyoti Dey

By solving the two-dimensional, nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically, we study the hydrodynamics of quantized vortices in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate excited by an oscillating potential. We calculate the critical velocity for the vortex nucleation in the presence and absence of dipole-dipole interaction. Above a critical velocity, the oscillating potential nucleates the vortex pairs, whose impulses alternatively change their direction synchronously with the oscillation of the Gaussian potential. We study the dynamics of the vortices and also the formation of the dark solitons which have not been previously reported in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate.

Collapse of a Quantum Vortex in an Attractive Two-Dimensional Bose Gas

Sambit Banerjee, Kai Zhou, Shiva Kant Tiwari +6 more

We experimentally and numerically study the collapse dynamics of a quantum vortex in a two-dimensional atomic superfluid following a fast interaction ramp from repulsion to attraction. We find the conditions and timescales for a superfluid vortex to radially converge into a quasistationary density profile, demonstrating the spontaneous formation of a vortex solitonlike structure in an atomic Bose gas. We record an emergent self-similar dynamics caused by an azimuthal modulational instability, which amplifies initial density perturbations and leads to the eventual splitting of a solitonic ring profile or direct fragmentation of a superfluid into disordered, but roughly circular arrays of Townes solitonlike wave packets. These dynamics are qualitatively reproduced by simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. However, a discrepancy in the magnitude of amplified density fluctuations predicted by our mean-field analysis suggests the presence of effects beyond the mean-field approximation. Our study sets the stage for exploring out-of-equilibrium dynamics of vortex quantum matter quenched to attractive interactions and their universal characteristics.
