Abstract

This chapter summarizes the life and work of Niels Bohr. It presents his view of modern physics and possible influences on him, and the impact of his activities. In particular, the chapter discusses the role of his philosophy mentor Høffding and colleague Rosenfeld. Finally the chapter compares Bohr's approach to the pragmatism of William James.

Niels Bohr and the Philosophy of Physics

Niels Bohr and the Philosophy of Physics: Twenty-First-Century Perspectives examines the philosophical views, influences and legacy of the Nobel Prize physicist and philosophical spokesman of the quantum revolution, Niels Bohr. The sixteen contributions in this collection by some of the best contemporary philosophers and physicists writing on Bohr’s philosophy today all carefully distinguish his subtle and unique interpretation of quantum mechanics from views often imputed to him under the banner of the “Copenhagen Interpretation.” With respect to philosophical influences on Bohr’s outlook, the contributors analyse prominent similarities between his viewpoint and Kantian ways of thinking, the views of the Danish philosopher Harald Høffding, and themes characteristic of American pragmatism. In recognizing the importance of Bohr’s epistemological naturalism they examine his defence of the indispensability of classical concepts from a variety of different perspectives. This collection shows us that Bohr’s interpretation of quantum mechanics, now nearly a century old, still has

This collection shows us that Bohr's interpretation of quantum mechanics, now nearly a century old, still has the power to shed light on a variety of issues that have arisen only since his lifetime, as well as decoherence theory and other non-collapse interpretations. Balancing historical themes with contemporary discussions, Niels Bohr and the Philosophy of Physics establishes Bohr's on-going contribution to the philosophy of physics and examines his place in the history of philosophy.

Prelude: The Modern Stance

Stig Stenholm

This chapter outlines the motivation for the work. It is argued that, acknowledging the remarkable progress of science, it is essential to dissect the modern world view from the aspects of physics. The physicist may be the outsider here, but he may also bring new light on a confusing situation. In order to combine the thinking in physics with that of philosophy, the lives and achievements of Bohr and Wittgenstein have been chosen and are discussed in some detail. The analysis is based on personal experiences; it thus remains a fiction: The Myth of Physics and the World.

Physics, philosophy, religion: searching the roots of Niels Bohr's quantum philosophy

Kari Ylinen

Bohrin ajattelun mahdollisista juurista on paljon keskusteltu. Uskontoon liittyvä näkökulma on perusteltavissa Bohrin omista käsityksistä riippumattomasti. Yhtenä tutkimuskysymyksenä työssä etsitään välillisiä vaikutteita sellaisten filosofien tuotannosta, joilla oli ajattelussaan uskontoon liittyviä painotuksia ja joiden filosofisesta vaikutuksesta Bohriin on keskusteltu. Kaikki kolme edellä mainittua filosofia kuuluvat tähän joukkoon. Høffding oli Bohrin filosofian opettaja yliopiston peruskurssilla, ja Bohr kävi hänen kanssaan filosofisia keskusteluja myöhemminkin. Työssä tulee Høffdingin oman osuuden ohella esiin hänen mahdollinen roolinsa Kierkegaardin ja Jamesin alun perin ainakin osittain uskonnonfilosofisesti painottuneiden näkemysten välittämisessä Bohrille.

Copenhagen mystery goes on

When Werner Heisenberg visited his old mentor Niels Bohr in Nazioccupied Copenhagen in the dark days of the Second World War, little could the pair have foreseen that their meeting would arouse so much interest among future historians of science. The study of their meeting is now something of a cottage industry.

Niels Bohr: Physics and the World

Herman Feshbach, Tetsuo Matsui, Alexandra Oleson

Containing the proceedings of the symposium held by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Niels Bohr, this collection was first published in 1988. More than any other individual, Bohr was responsible for the development of quantum mechanics and for many of its applications in the pursuit of fundamental understanding of physical reality. In addition to his unique role in the discovery and elucidation of quantum theory, Bohr led the study of the fission of nuclei and was greatly concerned with the impact of the existence of the atomic bomb in the post-World War II era. This unique volume provides a panoramic view of modern physics, some of the philosophical issues associated with quantum theory, the impact of this momentous scientific development on the political circumstance of the Cold War Era and the qualities of a superlative scientist.
