A scheme for amplification and discrimination of photons

A. R. Usha Devi, R. Prabhu, A. K. Rajagopal

A scheme for exploring photon number amplification and discrimination is presented based on the interaction of a large number of two-level atoms with a single mode radiation field. The fact that the total number of photons and atoms in the excited states is a constant under time evolution in Dicke model is exploited to rearrange the atom-photon numbers. Three significant predictions emerge from our study: Threshold time for initial exposure to photons, time of perception (time of maximum detection probability), and discrimination of first few photon states.

An exactly soluble multiatom-multiphoton coupling model

A N F Aleixo, A. B. Balantekin, M. A. Cândido Ribeiro

A class of bound-state problems which represent the interaction between a system of N two-level atoms and an electromagnetic radiation via an m-photon process is studied, with m = 1; 2; 3;.... We also evaluate some nonlinear effects usually related with the polarisability of the medium and with the dependence on the intensity of the radiation field on the matter-radiation interaction. We obtain exact values for the eigenstates and eigenvalues for all values of total angular momentum of the system and all possible number m of photons involved in the interaction. We give explicit analytic expressions for small numbers of atoms and discuss some aspects of the composition of the eigenstates and of the spectra obtained in these cases.

Application of Green's Functions to Radiative Cooperative Effects in Multiatom Systems

G. Comer Duncan

Spontaneous-radiation processes associated with a number of multiatom systems are studied. Green's-function techniques are used in conjunction with a model of $N$ two-level atoms interacting with a quantized radiation field to investigate the assumption of the independence of the spontaneous-radiation properties of a given atom from the states of the other atoms in the system. It is shown that the natural linewidth of an excited atom in the presence of a deexcited atom is different from that of an isolated excited atom. For interatomic separations smaller than a critical separation, the two-atom system is best considered as a collective unit with regard to its spontaneous-radiation properties. The influence of these "radiative cooperative effects" is studied also for the systems of two initially excited atoms. Also the influence of radiative cooperative effects in the scattering of a photon by a system of two deexcited atoms is studied. It is shown that the frequency distribution of the scattered radiation exhibits a double-peak structure for interatomic separations smaller than $\frac{3}{4}\ensuremath{\lambda}$. The techniques of Green's functions are then applied to the study of radiative cooperative effects in several many-atom systems. It is shown that within the context of the model certain information is obtained exactly via the Green's-function techniques as applied to the manyatom problems of a single excited atom in the presence of $N\ensuremath{\gg}1$ deexcited atoms and the scattering of a photon by a system of $N\ensuremath{\gg}1$ deexcited atoms. The necessity of treating manyatom systems from a "collective" point of view is easily seen from our results.
