Magnetic properties of degenerate atomic Fermi gases

E. V. Orlenko, Boris G. Matisov, G. T. Ketiladze

Magnetic effects in a degenerate atomic Fermi gas, such as the exchange enhancement of the paramagnetic susceptibility and the existence of the phase transition to the ferromagnetic state with the spontaneous polarization of the atomic spins, are discussed. The propagation of spin waves in the atomic system is considered.

Ultracold scattering properties of the short-lived Rb isotopes

James P. Burke, John L. Bohn

We compute the scattering properties of rubidium atoms at ultracold temperatures, placing special emphasis on the radioactive isotopes ${}^{82}\mathrm{Rb}{,}^{83}\mathrm{Rb}{,}^{84}\mathrm{Rb},$ and ${}^{86}\mathrm{Rb}.$ In combination with the more ``conventional'' isotope ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb},$ these species yield a wide variety of scattering behavior, with consequences for creating mixtures of Fermi-Fermi, Fermi-Bose, and Bose-Bose gases. In each of these mixtures we find at least one case where the interspecies scattering lengths can be tuned using an external magnetic field. These results should greatly broaden the prospects for quantum degenerate gases in future experiments.

Recent Experiments with Ultracold Quantum-Degenerate Atomic Gases

Dominik Schneble

This article reviews some recent experiments with ultracold quantum-degenerate atomic gases at MIT that were presented at the 35th EGAS Conference, including studies of a degenerate strongly interacting Fermi gas, the collective scattering of light from a Bose–Einstein condensate, and the manipulation of condensates in microstructured magnetic potentials.

In combination with the more ``conventional'' isotope 87Rb,{}^{87}\mathrm{Rb},87Rb, these species yield a wide variety of scattering behavior, with consequences for creating mixtures of Fermi-Fermi, Fermi-Bose, and Bose-Bose gases.
