Feedback Control in Quantum Optics: An Overview of Experimental Breakthroughs and Areas of Application

Alessio Serafini

We present a broad summary of research involving the application of quantum feedback control techniques to optical setups, from the early enhancement of optical amplitude squeezing to the recent stabilisation of photon number states in a microwave cavity, dwelling mostly on the latest experimental advances. Feedback control of quantum optical continuous variables, quantum nondemolition memories, feedback cooling, quantum state control, adaptive quantum measurements, and coherent feedback strategies will all be touched upon in our discussion.

A Proposed Nanofabrication Technique Using Optical Masks for Metastable Atom Lithography

Mark A. Baker, A.J. Palmer, Robert T. Sang

We present an overview of our progress towards using optical fields as 'light masks' for metastable atomic beam lithography. Numerical simulations have been undertaken to model the interaction of a beam of metastable neon atoms with a standing wave of 640.2 nm laser light. The current experimental setup and the proposed scheme for focusing the atoms is detailed

Quantum Tunnelling Demonstration using a Low-cost Experimental Setup

Carlos González, Juan Ruiz-Rosero, Ruy S. Bonilla +1 more

A simple and reliable experimental setup that illustrates one-dimensional quantum tunnelling effect is introduced. The main elements in this setup are the fabrication of sharp tips, and the sensing and approaching mechanism. A technique to fabricate very sharp tips is described, with tips made of 60 μm thick tungsten wire easily obtainable from car light bulbs. The technique produced tips with aspect ratios of 2 and tip diameter of 15 nm ±4.5 nm. A mechanical configuration to scale down semi-lineal displacement is suggested along with an experimental setup, including circuitry and measurement.
