Abstract

This work concerns the generation of optical entangled states by means of parametric down-conversion and their applications in the fields of quantum metrology and quantum information. Particularly we studied the manipulation of multiparameter entanglement by means of adaptive optics, demonstrating a way to improve entanglement visibility with type-II downconversion in the case of large detection apertures and a spatial counterpart to quantum dispersion-cancellation. Moreover, we worked on satellite quantum information, demonstrating the feasibility of single photon exchange between a LEO satellite and a ground station.

We investigate how quantum coincidence interferometry is affected by a controllable manipulation of transverse wave vectors in type-II parametric down-conversion using adaptive optics techniques. In particular, we discuss the possibility of spatial walk-off compensation in quantum interferometry and an effect of even-order spatial aberration cancellation.

Multiparameter entanglement in quantum interferometry

Mete Atatüre, Giovanni Di Giuseppe, Matthew D. Shaw +3 more

The role of multiparameter entanglement in quantum interference from collinear Type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion is explored using a variety of aperture shapes and sizes, in regimes of both ultrafast and continuous-wave pumping. We have developed and experimentally verified a theory of down-conversion which considers a quantum state that can be concurrently entangled in frequency, wavevector, and polarization. In particular, we demonstrate deviations from the familiar triangular interference dip, such as asymmetry and peaking. These findings improve our capacity to control the quantum state produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and should prove useful to those pursuing the many proposed applications of down-converted light.

Recent progress in single-photon and entangled-photon generation and applications

Shigeki Takeuchi

Quantum information science has recently attracted a lot of attention. Its applications include secure communication, quantum computation, quantum simulation, and quantum metrology. In these applications, photons are one of the most important physical quanta for their tolerance to decoherence. In this manuscript, we review the recent progress in single-photon/entangled-photon emitters and their applications: heralded single-photon sources using parametric downconversion and their application to quantum key distribution, highly indistinguishable heralded single-photon sources, fiber-coupled solid-state single-photon sources, and ultrabroadband-frequency entanglement generation.

Generation of correlated photon pairs in type-II parametric down conversion--revisited

Christian Kurtsiefer, Markus Oberparleiter, Harald Weinfurter

Type-II parametric down conversion in nonlinear optical crystals has turned out to be one of the most powerful methods to generate entangled photon pairs, and even allowed a large set of experiments on foundations of quantum mechanics and recent applications in quantum communication. In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of the emission characteristics for down-converted photons in order to investigate the possibility of high brightness sources for correlated photon pairs. Furthermore, we discuss possible ways to increase the collection efficiency for polarization entangled photon pairs.

Tomography of spatially entangled biphotons

D. Korn, Dirk Puhlmann, Carsten Henkel +2 more

Correlations in light can be used for a variety of applications in metrology and imaging. Several schemes in quantum imaging rely on multi-photon absorption. Therefore a detailed knowledge of the temporal and spatial correlations of the photons used is desired. This paper investigates the correlations of space-momentum entangled biphotons generated from type II parametric down conversion. The type II generation allows for individual manipulation in each path to control the spatial modes involved in the subsequent biphoton beam creation utilizing a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference.

An application of two-photon entangled states to quantum metrology

G. Brida, Marco Genovese, C. Novero

Besides many interesting applications to the study of the foundations of quantum mechanics, entangled states are now assuming much relevance for some practical applications. In particular, we discuss the use of two-photon entangled states produced in parametric down conversion for absolute quantum efficiency calibration of photodetectors, in the photon counting regime.
