Temporally uncorrelated photon-pair generation by dual-pump four-wave mixing

Abstract

We study the preparation of heralded single-photon states using dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing. The dual-pump configuration, which in our case employs cross-polarized pumps, allows for a gradual variation of the nonlinear interaction strength enabled by a birefringence-induced walk-off between the pump pulses. The scheme enables the preparation of highly pure heralded single-photon states, and proves to be extremely robust against the effect of nonlinear phase modulation at the required photon-pair production rates.

State engineering of photon pairs produced through dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing

Bin Fang, Offir Cohen, Jamy B. Moreno +1 more

We study theoretically the joint spectral properties of photon-pairs produced through spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) with two spectrally distinct pump pulses in optical fibers. We show that, due to the group velocity difference between the pulses, the signature of the interaction can be significantly different from spontaneous parametric down-conversion or SFWM with a single pump pulse. Specifically, we study the case where temporal walk-off between the pumps enables a gradual turn-on and turn-off of the interaction. By utilizing this property, we develop a new approach towards tailoring the spectral correlations within the generated photon pairs, demonstrating the ability to produce factorable photon-pair states, and hence heralded single photons in a pure wave-packet. We show that the use of two pumps is advantageous over single-pump SFWM approaches towards this goal: the usage of the dual-pump configuration enables, in principle, the creation of completely factorable states without any spectral filtering, even in media for which single-pump SFWM tailoring techniques are unsatisfactory, such as standard polarization-maintaining fiber.

Spectrally pure heralded single photons by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a fiber: reducing impact of dispersion fluctuations

Jacob G. Koefoed, Søren M. M. Friis, Jesper B. Christensen +1 more

We model the spectral quantum-mechanical purity of heralded single photons from a photon-pair source based on nondegenerate spontaneous four-wave mixing taking the impact of distributed dispersion fluctuations into account. The considered photon-pair-generation scheme utilizes pump-pulse walk-off to produce pure heralded photons and phase matching is achieved through the dispersion properties of distinct spatial modes in a few-mode silica step-index fiber. We show that fiber-core-radius fluctuations in general severely impact the single-photon purity. Furthermore, by optimizing the fiber design we show that generation of single photons with very high spectral purity is feasible even in the presence of large core-radius fluctuations. At the same time, contamination from spontaneous Raman scattering is greatly mitigated by separating the single-photon frequency by more than 32 THz from the pump frequency.

Tailored four-wave-mixing processes for optical quantum information science

Jesper B. Christensen

This thesis deals with applications of nonlinear four-wave mixing in the context of optical quantum information science. By enabling diverse functionalities such as single-photon generation, temporal shaping, and frequency conversion, four-wave mixing is a highly versatile tool for processing optical quantum information. The first part addresses the use of spontaneous four-wave mixing for generating entangled photon pairs with the particular property that the photons are uncorrelated in time and frequency. Two schemes are proposed to achieve this. The first proposal relies on a gradually varying interaction between two orthogonally polarized pump pulses in a birefringent waveguide. It is shown that, if the two pump pulses undergo a complete walk-through, the two generated photons emerge in orthogonal polarizations with uncorrelated- and tailorable time-frequency distributions. The second proposal deals with photon-pair generation in a microring resonator. In this setting, it is shown that a dual-pulse configuration can be used to excite- and subsequently de-excite the resonator on a sub-lifetime timescale. This turns out to strongly diminish time-frequency correlations. The second part considers the four-wave-mixing process Bragg scattering, which is known to enable noise-free frequency conversion. The Bragg-scattering process treated here, which occurs in a birefringent waveguide, is shown to allow for shape-preserving and strongly uni-directional conversion with a large acceptance bandwidth.

Dual-pump approach to photon-pair generation: demonstration of enhanced characterization and engineering capabilities

Yujie Zhang, Ryan Spiniolas, Kai Shinbrough +3 more

We experimentally study the generation of photon pairs via spontaneous four-wave mixing with two distinct laser pulses. We find that the dual-pump technique enables new capabilities: 1) a new characterization methodology to measure noise contributions, source brightness and photon-collection efficiencies directly from raw photon-count measurements; 2) an enhanced ability to generate heralded single photons in a pure quantum state; and 3) the ability to derive upper and lower bounds on heralded-photon quantum state purity from measurements of photon-number statistics even in the presence of noise. Such features are highly valuable in photon-pair sources for quantum applications.
