Mode suppression in the non-Markovian limit by time-gated stimulated photon echo

Wim P. de Boeij, Maxim S. Pshenichnikov, Douwe A. Wiersma

It is demonstrated that enhanced mode suppression in stimulated photon echo experiments can be obtained by diagonal time gating of the echo. This technique is especially important when the optical dynamics of the system is non-Markovian. A two-mode Brownian oscillator model is used to analyze the effect of time gating on the stimulated photon echo. The method is demonstrated on a dye solution of DTTCI in ethylene glycol at room temperature. Experimentally, time gating of the echo is accomplished by means of femtosecond phase-locked heterodyne detected stimulated photon echo. The vibrational dynamics in this system are explored by conventional stimulated photon echo experiments. Especially stimulated photon echo-maximum shift measurements are found to be particularly useful.

Interplay of light and collisions in photon echo formation

Н. Н. Рубцова, Гольдорт Вениамин Гершевич, В. Н. Ищенко +4 more

Situations when a set of resonant radiation pulses can not create photon echo (PE) or stimulated photon echo (SPE) at relatively simple optically allowed transition in a gas are investigated. Some cases when dilution by atomic buffer can imply PE or SPE generation are analyzed. Discovered experimentally mechanisms, amplitudes, and polarization properties of these collision induced PE and collision induced SPE are in agreement with theoretical predictions. Dynamic Stark suppression of photon echo is also studied.

Signal Suppression In The Phenomenon Of Long-lived Photon Echo

Nail Akhmediev

The phenomenon of long-lived photon echo (LPE) has attracted much recent attention [1-6]. This interest stems from the possible application of this phenomenon in high-capacity optical memory devices (OMD) [7-8]. At present many fundamental problems crucial to the construction of an operating device are solved. The possibility of multiple information read out without refresh is shown theoretically [9] and experimentally [5,10]. Resonant media with storage times of the order of tens of hours and more have been investigated [4,5].Nevertheless, up to now it has not been clear whether it is possible to selectively erase information in an arbitrary memory cell of OMD. It was pointed out for the first time in Ref. [ 11] that it is in principle possible to erase information with random access using LPE signal suppression. We investigate the effect of LPE signal suppression in this work in more detail, and propose a simple technique for random access information erasing.
