Signal Suppression In The Phenomenon Of Long-lived Photon Echo

Abstract

The phenomenon of long-lived photon echo (LPE) has attracted much recent attention [1-6]. This interest stems from the possible application of this phenomenon in high-capacity optical memory devices (OMD) [7-8]. At present many fundamental problems crucial to the construction of an operating device are solved. The possibility of multiple information read out without refresh is shown theoretically [9] and experimentally [5,10]. Resonant media with storage times of the order of tens of hours and more have been investigated [4,5].Nevertheless, up to now it has not been clear whether it is possible to selectively erase information in an arbitrary memory cell of OMD. It was pointed out for the first time in Ref. [ 11] that it is in principle possible to erase information with random access using LPE signal suppression. We investigate the effect of LPE signal suppression in this work in more detail, and propose a simple technique for random access information erasing.

Information erasing in the phenomenon of long-lived photon echo

Nail Akhmediev

The possibility of erasing information in an arbitrary cell of an optical memory device based on the phenomenon of long-lived photon echo is theoretically considered. Optimal conditions for a maximal number of write-erase cycles in a given cell are obtained, and an experimental setup for observing this effect is proposed.

Optical data storage based on the long-lived photon echo

В. В. Самарцев

The phenomenon of the long-lived photon echo (LPE), discovered in a previous paper can be used for optical storage. We discuss the main peculiarities of LPE in a three-level system, one level of which is metastable. The crystals, doped by the rare-earth ions such as Pr/sup 3+/ and Eu/sup 3+/, the Van Vleck paramagnetics, are usually used as the data medium of such optical storage.

Long-Lived Photon Echo in Van-Vleck Paramagnetics: Physics and Optical Storage

Vitali V. Samartsev

The results of the own experimental and theoretical investigations of the long-lived photon echo (LPE) are reported. The special type of the resonant media, named as Van-Vleck paramagnetics (for example, LaF3:Pr3+), is used in our experiments. The physical mechanisms of LPE-forming are studied in these experiments. The various problems of the optical storage, using LPE, are discussed.

Random access processing of optical memory by use of photon-echo interference effects

Mark F. Arend, E. Block, Sven R. Hartmann

Photon-echo interference effects are used to manipulate the amplitude and polarization of a single echo generated by the read pulse in a long-lived stimulated echo pulse sequence. Interference is selective in time, frequency, and space, permitting modification of the multiplexed echo code.

Long-lived photon echo in doped nanocrystals

А. А. Калачев, Daria D. Vlasova

The possibility of increase of the information storage time in optical memory devices based on the long-lived photon echo in rare-earth ion doped crystals provided that the latter are nanometer ones is analyzed. Taking into account that in such materials the information storage time is determined by the population lifetimes of hyperfine sublevels of a ground electron state it is possible to increase it due to the modification of phonon density of states in nanocrystals as compared to bulk crystals.

Accumulated long-lived optical echo and optical memory

В. А. Зуйков, D. F. Gainullin, В. В. Самарцев +3 more

An investigation was made of the optimal conditions for the generation of signals of an accumulated long-lived optical echo in an LaF 3 :Pr 3+ crystal (due to the 3 H 4 – 3 P 0 resonant transition) with the aim of basing a dynamic optical memory on this echo. The dependences of the intensities of the signals on the number of identical pulse pairs were determined experimentally for the first time and analyzed. An estimate was obtained in the lifetime of a metastable state.
