Abstract

Ultracold atomic gases have established themselves as quantum systems, which are clean and offer a high degree of control over crucial parameters. They are well isolated from their environment and thus offer the possibility to study coherent many-body dynamics. In this thesis, we address the dynamics of ultracold Fermions with large spin. Fermionic spinor gases differ from the typical situation in condensed matter physics, due to both the presence of the trap and the possibility of having fermions with large (>1/2) spin. Compared to the spin-1/2 case, large spin fermions must have one of two possible new properties. Either they obey an enhanced SU(N) symmetry, or they feature spin-changing collisions and a quadratic Zeeman shift. Here, we address the latter case. In the weakly interacting scenario, there are three different regimes. For very weak interactions, the system is in the collisionless regime and interactions can be taken into account on a mean-field level. For stronger interactions, collisions ensure local equilibrium and the system is described by hydrodynamic equations. For the intermediate regime however, there is no simple description. Moreover, the scattering cross-section for spin-changing and spin-conserving collisions can be different for large-spin fermions and we find a situation, where the system is hydrodynamic with respect to one process but not the other. In this thesis, a semi-classical Boltzmann equation with full spin coherence is developed, which allows to interpolate between the collisionless and hydrodynamic regime in the presence of the trap and for large spins. This approach goes beyond mean-field theory and treats the single-particle dynamics as an open system coupled to an environment given by all other particles. We find good agreement with experiments performed in the group of Klaus Sengstock at Hamburg University, using ultracold Potassium-40. We begin by investigating the effect of the harmonic trap on a collisionless system. We find a dynamical mechanism for spin-segregation, the mean-field driven creation of two domains of opposite magnetization in phase-space. The effect finds a transparent explanation when introducing the concept of dynamically induced long-range interactions, occurring when the fast phase-space rotation induced by a strong parabolic trap effectively smears out the contact interactions. Further results in this thesis have been achieved in collaboration with the experimental group in Hamburg. In the first project, we study the collective excitations of a trapped four-component Fermi gas. Long wavelength spin waves are excited by using a magnetic field gradient to wind up a spin spiral. During the subsequent dynamics, the spin components oscillate in the trap, while the total density remains constant. The dynamics can be understood quantitatively by disentangling it into dipolar, nematic and octupolar configurations. In a further experiment with spin-9/2 fermions, it was found that spin-changing interactions can lead to collective and coherent oscillations of the spin state of the whole Fermi sea with long lifetimes. It is found theoretically, that these giant oscillations are protected from spatial dephasing by dynamically induced long-range interactions. We identify the suppression of such oscillations in the high-density regime as the consequence of incoherent non-forward scattering. In the last project, we study collision processes in ultracold Potassium in greater detail. We find that they can be arranged in 3 categories: Spin-changing vs. spin-conserving collisions, processes depending on density vs. processes depending on density gradients and forward vs. lateral scattering. With this categorization, as well as the exact dependence of each process on scattering lengths and momenta, we can explain and simulate not only the coherent mean-field driven oscillations, but also relaxation effects that appear to be incoherent on the single-particle level Gases atómicos ultrafríos han establecido como sistemas cuánticos limpias que ofrecen un alto grado de control sobre parámetros cruciales.

Spin-Motion Coupling in Cold Atomic Gases

Andrew Koller

The interplay between spin and motional degrees of freedom in interacting electron systems has been a long-standing research topic in condensed matter physics. Interactions can modify the behavior of individual electrons and give rise to emergent collective phenomena such as superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. Theoretical understanding of non-equilibrium dynamics in interacting fermionic matter is limited, however, and many open questions remain. Ultracold atomic Fermi gases, with precisely controllable parameters, offer an outstanding opportunity to investigate the emergence of collective behavior in out-of-equilibrium settings. In this thesis we will describe how an optical lattice clock operated with neutral Fermionic atoms can be turned into a quantum simulator of charged particles in a strong magnetic field. We will then discuss the counterintuitive notion that weak interactions in a Fermi gas can lead to large scale collective behavior and global correlations. These ideas are being tested experimentally at JILA and the University of Toronto. We also investigate in detail the so-called spin model approximation which is used extensively throughout this thesis.

Teoría de campos fuera de equilibrio y condensados de Bose-Eisntein

Gustavo A. Moreno

Control of ultracold gases in tight waveguides

Spinor Tonks-Girardeau gases and ultracold molecules

F. Deuretzbacher

The research field of ultracold atomic quantum gases has been developing rapidly during the last years. That is due to the extremely flexible toolbox of the experimenters, which allows them to simulate for example a plenty of very different solid-state phenomena and to perform ultraslow chemical reactions in a controlled reversible manner. One of the newest research objects are one-dimensional atomic systems in optical lattices. In cigar-shaped optical traps the free motion of the particles can be restricted to one dimension. The tight transverse confinement, moreover, extremely strengthens the effective forces leading to strong correlations between the particles. In the first chapters of this thesis I study properties of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases with contact interactions. For this reason I have developed an exact diagonalization approach, which allows for an accurate construction of the many-body wave function of few particles. During the development of the exact-diagonalization programming code I oriented myself on experiments, which have been performed in the group of K. Sengstock on spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. At first I study the influence of the interaction strength on the properties of a spin polarized Bose gas. As long as the repulsive forces are weak, the particles behave like typical bosons, which favor to occupy the same single-particle state. In that regime, the main impact of the weak repulsion is a broadening and flattening of the single-particle wave function in order to reduce the mean distance between the bosons. In the opposite limit, an extremely strong (or even infinite) repulsive contact force prevents the bosons from staying at the same position, thereby mimicing Pauli's exclusion principle. Indeed it is observed that hard-core bosons behave in many respects like noninteracting fermions. Here I study the interaction-driven fermionization of quasi-one-dimensional bosons and its effect on the most important measurable quantities. It is shown that the momentum distribution reflects the permutation symmetry and the correlations of the many-particle wave function. Moreover, it clearly distinguishes between the above mentioned interaction regimes. In this work the boundaries of these regimes are determined for small finite-size systems. Next, I study a one-dimensional Bose gas of hard-core particles (i. e. the repulsive contact forces between the point-like particles shall be infinite) with spin degrees of freedom. For that reason an easy-to-use analytical formula of the exact many-body wave function of the highly correlated bosons is derived. The construction scheme is based on M. Girardeau's original idea of a Fermi-Bose map for spinless particles. As a striking consequence of our mapping we find that one-dimensional hard-core particles (bosons or fermions) with spin degrees of freedom behave in many respects like noninteracting spinless fermions and noninteracting distinguishable spins. Therefore, the energy spectrum of this highly correlated many-particle system can be constructed easily. Moreover, the analytical formula of the many-body wave function is the basis of an illustrative construction scheme for the spin densities, which resemble a chain of localized spins. Again, the momentum distribution is particularly interesting. Now its form strongly depends on the spin configuration of the one-dimensional system. The momentum distribution of spinless hard-core bosons shows striking differences from that of spinless noninteracting fermions. Here, by contrast, in some spin configurations the momentum distribution of the system shows clear fermionic signatures. Moreover, the construction scheme for the wave functions is also applicable to isospin-1/2 bosons, which e. g. represent Bose-Bose mixtures and two-level atoms. The second part of this thesis deals with the ultracold chemical reaction of K-40 and Rb-87 atoms. C. Ospelkaus et al. produced molecules from atom pairs in a controlled reversible manner by means of a Feshbach resonance. This groundbreaking experiment was an important step towards the production of ultracold polar molecules (in their internal vibrational ground state). This might enable the realization of quantum gases with long-range interactions in the near future. Here, I develop a theoretical approach for the description of the molecule formation in a three-dimensional optical lattice. This approach might also be useful for other atomic mixtures with large mass ratios.

Strong Correlations in Ultracold Fermi Gases

W. R. Schneider

Ultracold atomic gases provide an ideal system with which to study fundamental many-body physics.Exhibiting universal interactions in clean and controllable environments, long-used simple models as well as more exotic models can now be realized. The interplay between theory and experiment is therefore very active, and, in this thesis, I will detail several works, both exact analytic results and numerical calculations, which have impacts on current experiments.I begin with an introduction to the field including a brief discussion of experiments, the microscopic model of two species of interacting fermions, the BCS-BEC crossover and an overview of the various phases of atomic Fermi gases.I then describe the various results of my theoretical investigations, which are divided into five chapters.First, I describe radio frequency (RF) spectroscopy experiments and how they probe the single-particle spectral function. This leads to my results on an exact feature of the spectral lineshape, a universal large-momentum structure which exists for all states of interacting Fermi systems and has been verified in recent angle-resolved RF experiments.Second, I focus on gases which have a normal Fermi liquid ground state and show that their lineshape exhibits a characteristic jump discontinuity.I illustrate this Fermi surface singularity and the previously mentioned universal large momentum tail with explicit calculations.Third, I turn to the low energy structure of the single-particle spectral function in the superfluid state.I argue that sharp low energy quasiparticle excitations exist across the BCS-BEC crossover using a general argument that includes the interaction of fermions with the low-energy collective mode. This is illustrated with an explicit calculation within an approximation scheme.Fourth, I address the trap-induced inhomogeneity and use a Bogoliubov-deGennes analysis to test if a simple local density approximation (LDA) can provide an adequate description of a spin imbalanced Fermi system. Finally, I discuss dynamics of atomic gases motivated by a recent experiment in which two spin-polarized clouds are allowed to collide with each other.Despite the underlying attractive interactions, the clouds are seen to bounce off of each other.Using a hydrodynamic description, I argue that the short and intermediate time dynamics reflects a metastable state in which the effective interaction is repulsive. It is my hope that the work presented in this thesis can be used to gain key insights which inspire future endeavors.6.2 Time dependence of the center-of-mass positions zσ of the two spin clouds at unitarity for an initial separation z↑ (t = 0) = R z , z↓ (t = 0) = -R z using the upper branch energy functional and damping γ = 1.Red (upper) and blue (lower) curves denote the different spin species. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .71 6.3 The upper branch energy functional obtained from lowest order constraint variational method.(a), energy as a function of the polarization P for various values of k F a s as indicated in the figure.(b), energy as a function of the interaction parameter k F a s for various values of polarization P as indicated in the figure.(c), phase diagram of the interacting two-component Fermi gases. The two vertical red dashed lines indicates the separation between three phases. For 1/(k F a s ) > 1.124, the system is in the Fermi liquid (FL) phase. For 1.124 > 1/(k F a s ) > 0.91, the system is in the partially polarized phase (PP) and for 1/(k F a s ) < 0.91, the system is fully polarized. . . . . .74 6.4 (Color online) Time dependence of the center-of-mass positions zσ of the two spin clouds for k F (0)a s = 2. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .75 6.5 (Color online) Time dependence of the center-of-mass positions zσ of the two spin clouds for k F (0)a s = 0.5. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

For 1.124 > 1/(k F a s ) > 0.91, the system is in the partially polarized phase (PP) and for 1/(k F a s ) < 0.91, the system is fully polarized. . . . . .74 6.4 (Color online) Time dependence of the center-of-mass positions zσ of the two spin clouds for k F (0)a s = 2. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .75 6.5 (Color online) Time dependence of the center-of-mass positions zσ of the two spin clouds for k F (0)a s = 0.5. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
